Five minivans, five shapes of record. The Toyota Sienna has the fewest complaints, 1,815 across its record, and once past the 2011 car (612 complaints, a score of 28, AVOID) it is the safest choice here, with the 2016 and 2018 to 2020 cars scoring 83, 76, 77 and 88. The Honda Odyssey is the best van in this group from 2011 to 2017 and the worst from 2018 to 2020: the 2017 car scores 91 on 39 complaints, the 2018 scores 22 on 962. The Chrysler Pacifica opens with 1,514 complaints on the 2017 car and 862 on the 2018, both AVOID, before settling to 70 and 80 for 2019 and 2020. The Dodge Grand Caravan has one AVOID year, 2016, with 1,156 complaints; the Chrysler Town and Country on the same platform has no year below 72.

The ranking

  • Toyota Sienna, first. Lowest complaint total, five BUY years, and a 2016 to 2020 record no other van here matches. Avoid 2011; 2012, 2015 and 2017 are CAUTION; buy 2016 or 2018 to 2020.
  • Honda Odyssey, second, on the strength of 2011 to 2017: seven BUY years scoring 74 to 91. Avoid 2018 to 2020 and 2025; 2021 to 2024 are CAUTION at 62 to 69.
  • Chrysler Town and Country, third. Every year from 2011 to 2016 is a BUY, but on heavy counts: 773 complaints on the 2011 car, never fewer than 382. Buy the 2015; the rest score 72 to 79.
  • Dodge Grand Caravan, fourth. The 2019 and 2020 cars score 86 and 95, the highest here, on low evidence; 2014, 2015 and 2018 are solid BUY verdicts. Avoid 2016; 2012 and 2017 are CAUTION.
  • Chrysler Pacifica, fifth. Two AVOID years to start, three CAUTION years from 2021 to 2023, and fire recalls on the plug-in hybrid. Buy a 2019 or 2020.

The Odyssey: seven good years, then the 2018 redesign

From 2011 to 2016 the Odyssey has between 203 and 307 complaints a year and scores between 74 and 85, with Engine, Service Brakes and Power Train trading the top slot: Engine is 92 on the 2016 car, Power Train 73 on the 2014. The recalls are mostly second-row seats, 17V725000 and 16V933000. The 2017 car has 39 complaints and scores 91 on low evidence.

Then the redesign arrived. The 2018 Odyssey has 962 complaints, 120.2 per year on road, twelve recalls and a score of 22; the 2019 has 924 complaints, 132.0 per year, and the same score. Electrical System leads both at 250 and 213, and the driver-assistance categories follow: Forward Collision Avoidance at 191 and 210, Lane Departure at 147 on the 2019 car, Engine at 184 and 129. The campaigns fill in what the complaints describe: 19V299000 (12/04/2019) covers the 2018 and 2019 cars for a transmission control unit that may reboot on a loose battery terminal and shift unexpectedly, 18V795000 (09/11/2018) for sliding door latches that stick, 20V066000 (06/02/2020) for a harness that can short. The 2020 car has 448 complaints and scores 24. The 2021 to 2024 cars settle at 87 to 133 complaints and CAUTION verdicts of 62 to 69; the 2025 car, with 313 complaints in a single year on road, Electrical System at 165 and Engine at 163, is an AVOID at 42.

The Sienna: the 2011 problem, then the best late record here

The 2011 Sienna is the nameplate's worst year by a distance: 612 complaints, 40.8 per year on road, twelve recalls and a score of 28. Air Bags at 211 and Structure at 154 are the top two. Five passenger air bag inflator campaigns cover the 2011 to 2014 cars between them, and 16V858000 (29/11/2016) covers every Sienna from 2011 to 2016 for a power sliding door that may not open when commanded. Structure is the top component from 2013 to 2016, at 44, 44, 60 and 26, and the door campaign is the recall behind it. The 2012 car has 247 complaints and a CAUTION at 58, the 2014 has 163 and is the first BUY at 72, the 2015 slips to 230 and a CAUTION at 61, and the 2016, 75 complaints and a score of 83, is the one to buy before 2018.

The 2017 car has ten recalls, six safety-critical, and 153 complaints with Power Train at 36, a CAUTION at 58; its campaigns include the fuel pump recalls 20V012000 and 20V682000, which run to 2020. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 cars score 76, 77 and 88 on 69, 45 and 38 complaints; 2022 to 2025 are DATA PENDING.

The Pacifica: a launch that the recalls explain

The 2017 Pacifica has 1,514 complaints, 168.2 per year on road, and eleven recalls, nine safety-critical. Engine is 521, Power Train 468, Electrical System 389 and Steering 272. Three campaigns explain much of that: 18V049000 (11/01/2018) for engine control software that may fall out of sync with the crankshaft sensor and stall the engine; 19V348000 (09/05/2019), on the 2017 to 2019 cars, for a loose battery ground that can cause an intermittent loss of power steering assist or a stall; and on the 2018 car 18V492000 for a transmission component that may not have been welded. The 2018 car has 862 complaints and scores 28. The 2019 falls to 354 and a BUY at 70; the 2020 to 168 and 80.

The 2021 car climbs back to 366 complaints and a CAUTION at 58, and the plug-in hybrid campaigns take over the recall list: 23V010000 (17/01/2023) for a transmission wiring connector on 2017 to 2023 hybrids that can shut the engine down, and 26V362000 (04/06/2026) for a battery pack on 2020 to 2022 hybrids that may catch fire while parked. The 2022 and 2023 cars score 62 and 59; the 2024 and 2025 cars score 72 on low evidence.

Grand Caravan and Town and Country: one platform, two records

These two share recalls and a component pattern, yet the record separates them. From 2011 to 2014 Electrical System dominates both: 332, 336, 254 and 128 complaints on the Grand Caravan, 523, 395, 393 and 215 on the Town and Country. The matching campaign is 14V234000 (07/05/2014), for a vent window switch that may overheat, on the 2011 to 2014 cars of both. The Town and Country's counts are higher in each of those years, yet it scores 72 to 79 and every year is a BUY; the 2012 Grand Caravan, 583 complaints, is a CAUTION at 68.

In 2015 Power Train takes over on both, at 77 and 113, and both score 86, though 16V461000 (24/06/2016) later recalled the 2015 and 2016 automatic transmissions. Then 2016 splits them. The 2016 Grand Caravan has 1,156 complaints, 115.6 per year on road, Electrical System at 354, Power Train at 249 and Structure at 233, and an AVOID at 38; the 2016 Town and Country has 522 complaints and a BUY at 77. The Grand Caravan carries on: 413 complaints and a CAUTION in 2017, 269 and a BUY at 74 in 2018, then 42 and 19 complaints for 2019 and 2020, scoring 86 and 95 on low evidence.

What to check before you buy

  • On a 2018 to 2020 Odyssey, run the VIN for 19V299000, 18V795000 and 20V066000, work both sliding doors from every switch, and drive it with the driver-assistance systems on: Forward Collision Avoidance is 169 to 210 complaints a year.
  • On a 2011 to 2016 Sienna, confirm 16V858000 and the inflator campaigns and cycle the sliding doors; on a 2017 to 2020, confirm 20V012000 and 20V682000.
  • On a 2017 or 2018 Pacifica, confirm 18V049000, 19V348000 and 18V492000, and ask about any stall or loss of steering assist. On a plug-in hybrid, confirm 23V010000 and 26V362000.
  • On a 2011 to 2014 Grand Caravan or Town and Country, confirm 14V234000; on a 2015 or 2016, 16V461000. On a 2016 Grand Caravan ask for the full repair history: only the transmission has a campaign behind it.

Summary

Buy a 2016 or 2018 to 2020 Sienna, a 2011 to 2017 Odyssey, a 2015 Town and Country, a 2014, 2015 or 2018 to 2020 Grand Caravan, or a 2019 or 2020 Pacifica. Avoid the 2011 Sienna, the 2018 to 2020 and 2025 Odyssey, the 2016 Grand Caravan and the 2017 and 2018 Pacifica. Everything else is a CAUTION verdict.
