Privacy Policy

Effective 2026-10-04. This policy covers motorjury.com, published by MotorJury and operated by its editor, Adir Trabelsi, from Porto, Portugal. Questions and requests: privacy@motorjury.com, or the addresses on the contact page.

The short version

You can read every page on this site without an account and without telling us who you are. We use analytics to count visits, a consent banner to ask European visitors before any advertising cookie is set, and Google AdSense to show advertising. If you create an account we keep the minimum needed to run it, and you can delete it by writing to us. We do not sell personal data, we do not build marketing profiles, and we never share account data with advertisers.

What we collect, and why

Visitors without an account. Our servers and Cloudflare, which hosts the site, record the standard technical log of each request — the page requested, the time, the IP address, the browser and its language — to serve the page, defend against abuse and keep the site running. Google Analytics 4 counts visits and pages; it is configured with IP anonymisation and, in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, runs only after you consent. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits without cookies. Your chosen country for pricing is stored in your browser's local storage, not on our servers.

The VIN checker. A VIN you type is sent to the public NHTSA (United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) decoder and recall services to identify the vehicle. We do not store the VIN, and a VIN is not linked to you.

Accounts. If you create an account we store your email address, a display name, a password hash (PBKDF2-SHA256; we cannot read your password), the cars you have loved or saved, your site preferences and any owner-survey answers you submit. If you sign in with Google we receive your email address and name from Google and nothing else; we hold no Google password or token beyond the sign-in itself. Session tokens are stored hashed. Owner-survey answers are published in aggregate only once five owners have answered, and any written comment you submit is shown with the label "owner", never with your name or email.

Newsletter and alerts. An email address you submit for updates is used only to send those updates. Every message carries an unsubscribe link, and we will remove the address on request.

Advertising and cookies

Advertising on this site is served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or to other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, and opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu. Google's own description of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, no advertising or analytics cookie is set until you make a choice in the consent message, which is Google's certified consent management platform. Google Consent Mode starts in the "denied" state for advertising storage, advertising user data, advertising personalisation and analytics storage, and only your consent changes it. You can change your choice at any time from the "Privacy settings" link in the footer of every page, or by clearing cookies for motorjury.com.

Our own cookies are limited to the session cookie that keeps you signed in when you have an account, and the consent cookie that records your consent choice.

Photographs and third-party content

Car photographs are loaded from Wikimedia Commons, whose servers receive the standard request log (IP address, browser) when an image is fetched. We send no personal data to Wikimedia, and images are requested with a no-referrer policy so the page you are reading is not disclosed.

How long we keep it

Server logs are retained for up to 30 days. Analytics data is retained for 14 months. Account data is kept for as long as the account exists and deleted within 30 days of a deletion request. Newsletter addresses are deleted on unsubscribe.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation you may ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to stop processing it, ask for it in a portable format, and object to processing based on legitimate interest. Write to privacy@motorjury.com; we answer within 30 days and never charge for a request. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; in Portugal that is the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD).

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes

When this policy changes, the effective date at the top changes with it. Material changes to how account data is used are announced by email to account holders before they take effect.
