Three Volkswagens, three shapes of record. The Volkswagen Atlas has three years to avoid or approach with caution, 2018, 2019 and 2021, with 461, 471 and 461 complaints and scores of 56, 51 and 42; its best years with real evidence are 2022 and 2023 at 73 each. The Volkswagen Tiguan was good for seven straight years, 2011 to 2017, with scores between 84 and 89, then fell to 45 on the 2018 redesign and 40 on the 2022 car; 2023 is the year to buy at 84. The Volkswagen Golf has a small record, 747 complaints across eleven years, but the 2015, 2017 and 2019 cars are AVOID at 31, 38 and 46; the 2012 to 2014 and 2020 to 2021 cars are the ones to have.

The Atlas: 2018, 2019 and 2021

The Atlas is on record from 2018 with 1,939 complaints and 64 recall campaigns in eight model years. The 2018 car has twelve campaigns, seven safety-critical, and the list reads like a production audit: 18V284000 (02/05/2018) for a fuel tank that may leak, 18V369000 (01/06/2018) for brake caliper pistons with insufficient coating, 18V536000 (15/08/2018) for caliper bracket bolts not tightened enough, and 20V057000 (31/01/2020) for an air bag sensor that can delay or disable deployment. The complaint categories line up: Electrical System 110, Air Bags 100, Engine 97 and Service Brakes 75.

The 2019 car is worse per year on the road, 67.3 against 57.6, and Air Bags leads at 139 complaints. Its campaigns are air bags again: 19V218000 (20/03/2019) for an incorrect side air bag installed, 23V671000 (04/10/2023) for a missing weld on the driver's side air bag housing, and 22V152000 (28/03/2022) for door wiring contacts that corrode and delay deployment. Service Brakes is second at 76, then Electrical System 73 and Forward Collision Avoidance 72.

The 2020 car has 27 complaints and a score of 87 on low evidence; do not take it as a fixed year. The 2021 car shows it was not: 461 complaints, 92.2 per year on the road, twelve campaigns, and the lowest Atlas score at 42. Electrical System leads at 144 and campaign 21V616000 (06/08/2021) explains part of it, damaged fuse box relays that can activate the horn or starter on their own. Two steering knuckle campaigns, 20V712000 (17/11/2020) and 21V026000 (27/01/2021), cover knuckles damaged in production and knuckles that may fracture at the strut mount. Service Brakes has 95 complaints and Engine 83.

From 2022 the count drops: 178 complaints and a score of 73, then 130 and 73 in 2023. Engine leads both years at 49 and 35, and campaign 22V753000 (07/10/2022) covers 2022 and 2023 cars for connecting rod bearings that may fail. The 2024 car slips back to CAUTION at 54 with 167 complaints and 83.5 per year, Electrical System leading again at 43; the 2025 car has 44 complaints and no pattern yet.

The Tiguan: 2018 and 2022

The first-generation Tiguan is a quiet record. From 2011 to 2017 the counts are 160, 152, 139, 83, 62, 96 and 73, and Air Bags is the top category in every year from 2013 to 2017, at between 28 and 63 complaints. The campaigns behind that are 15V483000 (04/08/2015), the frontal air bag debris recall covering 2011 to 2014 cars, and 19V535000 (17/07/2019), an air bag control unit capacitor on the 2015 and 2016 cars that can deactivate the system or deploy it unprompted. Confirm those; otherwise the 2014 to 2017 cars, with scores of 86 to 89, are the best Tiguans on record. All run on premium fuel, at 22 to 24 mpg combined.

The 2018 redesign changed that. The 2018 car has 283 complaints, twelve recall campaigns and a score of 45, and Engine leads at 81, followed by Unknown Or Other 52, Power Train 51 and Electrical System 44. The campaigns are mostly assembly faults on the long-wheelbase car: 18V159000 (08/03/2018) for engine support bolts not tightened, 18V324000 (16/05/2018) for a loose lower ball joint nut, 18V262000 (25/04/2018) for a rear shock absorber that may separate at a weld, and 20V724000 (20/11/2020) for seat belt webbing that may tear in a crash. The 2019 car improves to 188 complaints and 69; the 2020 and 2021 cars score 76 and 72 on 138 and 133 complaints.

The 2022 car is the worst Tiguan on record: 252 complaints, 63.0 per year on the road, a score of 40. Engine has 105 of those complaints, Electrical System 58, Power Train 42 and Lane Departure 40. Of five campaigns only one is safety-critical, 21V853000 (03/11/2021), a loose brake pipe nut near the right front wheel; 22V176000 (23/03/2022) covers rear suspension knuckles that may corrode and crack on 2021 and 2022 cars. Nothing on the recall list accounts for 105 Engine complaints; the record shows the pattern without the cause. The 2023 car has 60 complaints, one recall and a score of 84, and the 2024 car 57 and 75. The 2025 car already has two safety-critical campaigns, 25V526000 (13/08/2025) for a loose rear tie rod bolt and 25V854000 (10/12/2025) for occupant detection, and sits at CAUTION.

The Golf: 2015, 2017 and 2019

The Golf's counts are small, so the score moves on the recall list as much as the complaints. The 2011 car, a CAUTION at 60, has Fuel/Propulsion System, Fuel System and Diesel in its top five, at 30, 23 and 19; campaign 11V490000 (03/10/2011) covers the 2011 and 2012 diesel fuel system. The 2012 to 2014 cars have 48, 43 and 11 complaints and scores of 77 to 83, though each carries driver's air bag inflator campaigns 16V078000 (10/02/2016) and 18V148000 (06/03/2018).

The 2015 car, the first of the seventh generation, has 131 complaints and twelve recall campaigns, eight safety-critical, more than any other Golf year, and a score of 31. Four are fuel system: 15V028000 (23/01/2015) for the fuel rail, 15V229000 (17/04/2015) for fuel pump plating, 16V647000 (07/09/2016) for a suction pump that sends fuel into the evaporative system, and 24V110000 (14/02/2024), covering 2015 to 2020 cars. Campaign 15V705000 (26/10/2015) covers a camshaft lobe that may shear and take the brake vacuum pump with it. Engine leads at 26, then Unknown Or Other 23 and Air Bags 21.

The 2017 car has the highest count on the Golf record, 187, and Fuel/Propulsion System has 55 of them, nearly double the 2016 car's 29; the one safety-critical campaign specific to that year, 16V955000 (29/12/2016), is for seat belt pretensioners. The 2019 car has 82 complaints with Engine at 37 and Power Train at 17, and a safety-critical ignition switch campaign, 23V604000 (30/08/2023). The 2018 car between them has 37 complaints and scores 74; the 2020 and 2021 cars have 6 and 7 and score 90 and 92, on low evidence.

How the three rank

The Tiguan has the best sustained run, seven BUY verdicts from 2011 to 2017 and a return to 84 in 2023. The Golf is second: its bad years are recall-driven and its good years quiet, but the evidence is thin in most. The Atlas is last: three of its eight years are at 461 complaints or more, and its best year with high evidence scores 73.

What to check before you buy

  • On any Atlas, pull the recall history by VIN first; the 2018, 2019 and 2021 cars each have eleven or twelve campaigns and the fuel tank, brake caliper, steering knuckle and air bag items must all show as completed.
  • On a 2022 or 2023 Atlas, confirm 22V753000 and listen to the engine at idle from cold.
  • On a 2015 or 2016 Tiguan, confirm 19V535000; on a 2018, confirm the engine support bolt, ball joint, shock absorber and seat belt campaigns.
  • On a 2022 Tiguan, check 21V853000 and 22V176000, and insist on a full service history; the 105 Engine complaints have no campaign behind them.
  • On a 2015 Golf, count the completed campaigns against the twelve on record; on any 2015 to 2020 Golf, confirm 24V110000, issued in 2024 and easily missed.

Summary

Avoid the 2021 Atlas and treat the 2018, 2019 and 2024 cars with caution; 2022 and 2023 are the Atlas years to buy. Avoid the 2018 and 2022 Tiguan; buy a 2014 to 2017 or a 2023. Avoid the 2015, 2017 and 2019 Golf; buy a 2012 to 2014 or a 2020 to 2021.
