Editor's note

Avoid the 2015, 2017 and 2019 Volkswagen Golf, which score 31, 38 and 46 on 131, 187 and 82 complaints, and treat the 2011 and 2016 cars (scores 60 and 50) with caution. Buy a 2012 to 2014 car, which score 77 to 83 on 48, 43 and 11 complaints, or a 2020 or 2021 car, which score 90 and 92 on 6 and 7. Read the full note on the model page. 2018 specifically: a year the record favours — 37 complaints, score 74/100. The caveats in the note apply to other years of this nameplate more than to this one.

Vehicle brought in for Recall 20UF (fuel tank suction pump fire risk) on 04/15/2026. Upon pickup after approximately one week of dealer service, a strong chemical odor was present in the cabin that did not exist prior to service. Odor persists despite cabin air filter replacement with activated charcoal filter, professional carpet shampooing, and extended airing out over several weeks. Dealer dismissed concerns and s…
Volkswagen Wastegate Turbo Failure / design flaw and “wrongfully and intentionally” concealed a defect from consumers that could cause their vehicle’s engine turbocharger to fail prematurely at any time. Drivers have been unfairly forced to pay thousands out of pocket to repair and my estimate from a VW. dealer is: $4199.21 and I had to pay a $200 diagnostic fee. This is a major safety issue for the vehicle will lag…
There is an issue with the gear shift cover trim. The piece that goes around the gear shift has a chrome coating that has been pealing off. Over multiple occasions that pealed off piece of metal has cut my finger causing bleeding. There seems to be a recall on the DSG GTI for this, but not the MT. I am having the same exact issue as the DSG and the replacement part is the exact same (likely same original part). …
