The Ford Edge has two years to avoid and they belong to different generations. The 2013 scores 42 on 2,442 owner complaints, and the 2017 scores 35, the lowest of the fourteen years on record, on 1,314 complaints led by Engine. The years to buy are the 2014, which scores 85 on 381 complaints, and the 2020 to 2024 cars, which score between 82 and 90 with no year above 312 complaints. Everything else on the record is CAUTION, from the 2011 at 54 to the 2019 at 60, and the 2012 is DATA PENDING with no complaints on file at all.
The first generation: 2011 and 2013
The 2011 car has 1,801 complaints and the same two categories at the top that the 2013 has: Electrical System at 686 and Service Brakes at 309, with Structure (274) and Exterior Lighting (187) behind them. Its three recall campaigns all date from the car's first months: 10V516000 (27 October 2010) for a liftgate lock disabled by incorrect module settings, 10V659000 (29 December 2010) for a body control module with the potential for an internal short, and 11V128000 (24 February 2011), the one safety-critical campaign, for vehicles inspected at the factory with faulty diagnostic software. None of them is about brakes, and the Service Brakes complaints sit on the record without a campaign behind them.
The 2013 car is the same story with the volume turned up. Electrical System is 852, Service Brakes 634, Unknown Or Other 425, Structure 300, Exterior Lighting 191. At 187.8 complaints for every year on the road, the 2013 has the highest normalised rate of any Edge, and its two recall campaigns do not touch its leading components: 14V002000 (6 January 2014, safety-critical) is for a fuel line pulse damper housing that can crack on 2012 and 2013 cars with the 2.0-litre engine, and 14V393000 (2 July 2014) is for a halfshaft on 2012 to 2014 cars. The 2012 sits between these two years with nothing on file, no complaints and no recalls, so the record cannot say whether it shares the pattern.
2014: the year the record likes
The 2014 is the last year of the first generation and it scores 85 on 381 complaints, 31.8 per year on the road, roughly a sixth of the 2013's rate. Its component list is flat: Unknown Or Other 81, Service Brakes 66, Electrical System 56, Power Train 56, Engine 45. Electrical System falls from 852 to 56 in one model year. Three recall campaigns are on record for it, one safety-critical: 14V393000 (the halfshaft campaign shared with the 2013), 15V005000 (9 January 2015) for a fuel pump, and 20V692000 (10 November 2020) for the front halfshaft support bracket on front-wheel-drive cars with the 2.0-litre or 2.3-litre engine. If you want an Edge from the first generation, this is the one.
The second generation: 2015 to 2019
The redesigned Edge arrived for 2015 and the complaint mix changed. Engine moves to the top at 188 and stays there for four years: 310 in 2016, 658 in 2017, 431 in 2018. Engine And Engine Cooling appears alongside it, at 88 in 2016, 259 in 2017 and 171 in 2018, and the two categories together are the record's description of the 2017 problem. Service Brakes runs second in 2015 and 2016 (153 and 174) and third in 2017 (228) before falling to 39 in 2018, and Hydraulic shows 77 in 2015 and 105 in 2017. The scores follow: 65, 55, 35, 55. No recall campaign on the sheet addresses the engine complaints, so the record gives the symptom pattern and not the cause.
The recalls that do exist for 2015 to 2018 are mostly about brakes and the transmission. 20V469000 (10 August 2020, safety-critical) is for front brake hoses that can rupture prematurely on 2015 to 2018 cars, and 25V544000 (22 August 2025, safety-critical) is for the rear brake jounce hose on the same years. 16V733000 (12 October 2016, safety-critical) covers 2015 and 2016 cars that may have been given incorrect ABS software during dealer servicing. 17V427000 (6 July 2017) and 18V390000 (11 June 2018) are for torque converter weld studs on 2017 and 2018 cars with the 2.0-litre engine and six-speed automatic. 17V123000 (27 February 2017, safety-critical) is for a driver's frontal air bag that may not fully inflate on 2016 and 2017 cars, 17V205000 (27 March 2017) is for an improperly welded windscreen header on 2017 cars with the panoramic roof, and 18V548000 (20 August 2018, safety-critical) is for unsecured power cables at the starter and alternator on 2018 cars. The 2015 and 2016 cars carry seven campaigns each, five of them safety-critical; the 2017 carries eight.
The 2019 is a different car on the record. Engine drops to 153 and Power Train takes over at 448, the highest Power Train count of any year, on a total of 751. The 2019 facelift brought a new automatic transmission, and the one recall that speaks to it is 20V550000 (10 September 2020), for missing or loose bolts on the start/stop accumulator endcap on 2019 and 2020 cars. 19V766000 (25 October 2019, safety-critical) is for a driver's seat belt pretensioner anchor that may have been improperly crimped. The 2019 scores 60, still CAUTION.

The good years: 2020 to 2024
The 2020 car keeps the same leading component, Power Train at 181, but the total falls to 312 and the score rises to 83. It has four recall campaigns and none is safety-critical; the one worth knowing is 21V011000 (15 January 2021), for a rear drive unit that may seize for lack of lubricant on 2020 and 2021 cars. The 2021 scores 82 on 107 complaints, 21.4 per year, and the 2022 scores 85 on 128. Power Train still leads both (33 and 42), and Back Over Prevention (20 in each year) reflects the rearview camera campaigns: 22V151000 (11 March 2022) for a software error that blanks the camera image, 25V160000 (14 March 2025) for cars repaired incorrectly under it, 25V315000 (9 May 2025) and 26V124000 (3 March 2026), the last for a module that may overheat and shut down. 24V635000 (23 August 2024) covers 2021 and 2022 cars with the 2.7-litre engine, whose intake valves may break. The 2023 car scores 90, the best on the record, on 22 complaints, and the 2024 scores 89 on 42. Evidence is medium for 2021 and 2022 and low for 2023 and 2024, which is the site's way of saying those scores rest on small numbers.
What to check before you buy
- On a 2011 or 2013, drive the car cold and test the brake pedal for effort and travel on the first few stops, and check every warning lamp on start-up; Electrical System and Service Brakes make these years what they are, and there is no recall to fall back on.
- On any 2015 to 2018 car, confirm by VIN that 20V469000 and 25V544000 (brake hoses) are complete, then look at the coolant level and the overflow bottle. Engine And Engine Cooling is the second category on the 2017 and 2018, and a car that needs topping up is the one the record describes.
- On a 2017 or 2018 with the 2.0-litre engine, ask for 17V427000 or 18V390000 (torque converter).
- On a 2019 or 2020, ask for 20V550000 and drive the car through repeated stop-start cycles in traffic; Power Train is the leading category on both years.
- On a 2020 or 2021 with all-wheel drive, ask for 21V011000 (rear drive unit).
- On a 2021 or 2022, put the car in reverse and confirm the camera image appears every time, and check that 25V160000 was done if 22V151000 was.
- On a 2021 or 2022 with the 2.7-litre engine, ask for 24V635000.
Summary
Avoid the 2013 Edge, which has 2,442 complaints and the highest normalised rate on the record, and the 2017, which scores 35 on 1,314 complaints led by Engine and Engine And Engine Cooling. The 2011, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 are CAUTION at 54 to 65 and are worth considering only with the brake hose and transmission campaigns documented. Buy a 2014, which scores 85, or a 2020 to 2024, which score 82 to 90 with the 2021 onward resting on small complaint counts. The 2012 has no record at all.
