Used BMW 3 Series and 5 Series: the years to avoid

The 2011 3 Series has 994 owner complaints on record and the 2011 5 Series 1,063. Both BMW saloons improve sharply after 2012, then the record goes thin. What it shows, year by year.

The used BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series share a worst year, and it is 2011: the 3 Series has 994 owner complaints against that model year and a score of 31, the 5 Series 1,063 and a score of 37. The years to buy are narrower than the badge suggests. On the 3 Series it is 2013, which has 74 complaints and scores 87, with 2012 a reasonable second choice; on the 5 Series no year with a deep record does better than CAUTION, and the 2017 to 2019 cars that score 91 to 94 do so on 18, 0 and 12 complaints with evidence the site marks low. The 2014 3 Series is the other car to walk past, with 555 complaints and a score of 36.

The 2011 cars

The 2011 3 Series logs 66.3 complaints per year on the road, more than five times the 2012 car's 12.6. The components tell a consistent story: Engine leads with 312, Air Bags follow with 214, Electrical System with 202 and Engine And Engine Cooling with 184. The recall list matches the complaint list. Eight campaigns touch the 2011 car, four of them safety-critical, and they include 14V176000 on the engine, 17V683000 on the crankcase ventilation heater, 17V676000 on wiring and electrical connectors, 13V044000 on the electrical system, and two driver-side air bag inflator campaigns, 20V017000 and 24V513000, the second of which was not issued until 3 July 2024. A 2011 xDrive car also carries 11V476000, for front driveshaft attachment bolts that may not have been tightened to specification.

The 2011 5 Series is worse by count and by rate: 70.9 complaints per year on the road, the highest figure in either table. Its component list is unusual. Tires lead with 235, then Engine with 210, Power Train with 159, Fuel/Propulsion System with 133 and Steering with 117. Six recall campaigns touch it, and they cover the engine (14V176000), the turbocharger on the 550i (18V248000), the fuel pump (16V746000), the air bag sensor cluster unit on 528i through 550xi cars (16V832000) and the same crankcase heater campaign as the 3 Series (17V683000). Nothing in the recall list addresses tyres or steering, so the two largest complaint categories on the 2011 5 Series went unaddressed.

Where the two saloons part company

After 2011 the 3 Series recovers quickly and the 5 Series does not. The 2012 3 Series has 177 complaints and scores 78; the 2013 car has 74 and scores 87, the best year on either table with a record the site rates medium or better. Engine remains the top component in both years, at 68 and 21, but the totals are small. The recalls on these cars are mostly shared with the 5 Series and concern the brake vacuum power assist, campaigns 13V454000 and 14V627000, and a cooling system pump campaign, 24V608000, issued on 13 August 2024 for 2012 to 2015 328i cars.

The 2012 5 Series has 317 complaints and scores 46, still AVOID. The 2013 car has 252 and scores 58, the 2014 car 233 and scores 54, both CAUTION, both at 19.4 complaints per year on the road. Engine is the top component in every one of these years, at 105, 108 and 76, and Electrical System is second in 2013 and 2014 with 54 and 65. A buyer choosing between a 2013 3 Series and a 2013 5 Series is choosing between 74 complaints and 252.

The 2014 3 Series

Then the 3 Series stumbles. The 2014 car has 555 complaints, 46.2 per year on the road, and 11 recall campaigns, eight of them safety-critical, the highest safety-critical count of any year on either nameplate. Engine leads the complaints with 165, but the second and fifth components are new: Fuel/Propulsion System with 112 and Fuel System with 50. The recalls explain that. Campaign 15V189000, issued 31 March 2015, covers the petrol fuel pump on 2014 320i, 328i and 335i cars; the diesel 328d carries 21V586000 for the high-pressure fuel pump, 21V907000 for the diesel fuel system and 18V755000 for the exhaust gas recirculation valve; and a 2014 328d xDrive also has 20V185000 for the constant-velocity joint. On top of that sit three air bag campaigns, 24V527000 for the driver inflator, 24V288000 for the side air bags and 25V871000 for the head air bags, the last issued on 17 December 2025.

The 2015 car is better but not clear: 363 complaints, 33.0 per year, score 56, CAUTION. Electrical System leads with 130, ahead of Engine And Engine Cooling with 86 and Engine with 78.

What the record does not yet say

From 2016 the 3 Series table shows zero complaints in every year through 2020 and three in 2021, and the site marks the evidence low. The scores of 72 to 86 in those years reflect the recall record more than the complaint record. The 5 Series is the same: 18 complaints for 2017, none for 2018, 12 for 2019, 2 for 2020 and 1 for 2021. I would not read a score of 94 on 18 complaints as a promise. What the record does show for these years is recall activity, and it is rising. The 2020 3 Series has 11 campaigns, the 2021 car nine with seven safety-critical, and the 2021 5 Series ten with six safety-critical. Several apply to both: 25V636000 for a starter relay that may corrode, on 2019 to 2021 330i and 2020 to 2022 530i cars; 26V056000 for the starter assembly; and 20V601000 for the traction battery on the 330e and 530e plug-in hybrids. The 5 Series adds 21V046000 for output shafts on 2020 to 2021 530i xDrive and 540i xDrive cars, and 26V525000, issued 12 August 2026, for the driveshaft connection on 2021 to 2023 540i and M550i cars. The 2022 to 2025 cars on both nameplates are DATA PENDING.

Ranking the two

By the record, the 3 Series is the better used car, on one condition: the year. Its 2013 car, scoring 87 with 74 complaints and only three recall campaigns, is the best BMW saloon year this site can vouch for with a medium-evidence record. The 5 Series never manages a year with a deep record above 58, and its 2011 car is the worst single year on either table. Ranked, then: 3 Series first, 5 Series second, and the gap is the 2013 3 Series against a 5 Series that is CAUTION or AVOID in every year from 2011 to 2014.

What to check before you buy

  • On any 2011 car, ask the dealer to run the VIN against 20V017000 and 24V513000 for the air bag inflators, and 14V176000 for the engine. The 2024 campaign is recent enough that many cars will not have had it done.
  • On a 2014 3 Series, check 15V189000 for the fuel pump on petrol cars, and 21V586000, 21V907000 and 18V755000 on a 328d. With Fuel/Propulsion System at 112 complaints and Fuel System at 50, a fuel smell or a hesitation under load on the test drive is a reason to walk away.
  • On 2012 to 2015 328i and 2012 to 2013 528i cars, confirm the brake vacuum campaigns 13V454000 and 14V627000 and the 2024 cooling pump campaign 24V608000 are complete.
  • On a 2011 5 Series, with Tires at 235 complaints and Steering at 117, inspect all four tyres for uneven wear and drive it on a straight road with light hands.
  • On a 2019 to 2021 330i or 530i, ask about 25V636000 and 26V056000 for the starter, and on a 330e or 530e, 20V601000 for the traction battery.
  • On any diesel, ask for the exhaust gas recirculation campaign 18V755000 by number.

Summary

Avoid the 2011 3 Series (994 complaints, score 31), the 2014 3 Series (555, score 36) and the 2011 and 2012 5 Series (1,063 and 317, scores 37 and 46). Treat the 2015 3 Series and the 2013 and 2014 5 Series as CAUTION. Buy the 2013 3 Series, or a 2012 if the price is right. The 2016 onward 3 Series and 2017 onward 5 Series have records too thin to score with confidence, and a buyer should verify recall completion rather than trust the number.
