Used Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette: the years to avoid

The Corvette's record has one category and two years: Wheels, with 223 complaints on the 2017 car and 124 on the 2019. The Camaro's soft years, 2015 and 2017, are electrical and steering.

The Chevrolet Corvette has two years to avoid, 2017 (score 37, 255 complaints) and 2019 (46, 147 complaints), and one component explains both: Wheels, with 223 and 124 complaints respectively. The Chevrolet Camaro has no AVOID year, but two CAUTION years, 2015 (69, on 206 complaints) and 2017 (62, on 185), and the rest of its record is BUY. The Corvette years to buy are 2011 and 2012 (87 and 92), 2014 and 2015 (77 and 74), 2018 (83) and 2020 to 2022 (78, 89, 88); the Camaro years to buy are 2011 and 2012 (79 and 81), 2016 (81), 2018 (85) and 2020 to 2022 (88, 87, 93). Both cars have model years with no record at all, and those are set out below.

The Corvette's wheel years

The Corvette's record is small, 806 complaints across fifteen model years, and for most of them the top component is below 50. Then the 2017 car arrives with 255 complaints, of which 223 are in the Wheels category. The next component on that car is Steering at 18. The 2018 car has 51 complaints and Wheels is again first with 45. The 2019 car has 147 complaints and Wheels is 124. The 2017 car's 223 Wheels complaints alone exceed the total complaints of any other Corvette year.

There is no recall campaign for wheels on any Corvette year on this site. The campaigns on the 2017 car are 19V086000 (07/02/2019) and 25V175000 (20/03/2025), both for the electric power steering assist that may fail, shared with the 2017 Camaro and two Cadillac models, and 16V651000 and 17V437000 for frontal air bags across 2014 to 2017. The 2019 car's only campaign, 18V360000, covers the ZR1's sensing diagnostic module. So the wheel complaints are a symptom pattern the record shows and the manufacturer has not addressed by campaign; a buyer of a 2017 to 2019 car should inspect the wheels as if they were a known fault, because on this record they are.

The rest of the Corvette record

The 2011 and 2012 cars, the last of the previous generation, are the Corvette's best: 85 and 56 complaints, scores of 87 and 92, one recall campaign each (11V491000, for the coupe's hatch hinge) and none safety-critical. Fuel/Propulsion System is the top component on both, at 48 and 28, with no campaign behind it. The 2014 redesign brought a busier first two years: 5 campaigns on each of the 2014 and 2015 cars, 4 of them safety-critical, among them the air bag sensing module (14V299000), the optional sport seats (14V342000), rear shock absorber welds (14V377000), a parking brake cable (14V568000), the driver's air bag back plate (14V570000) and a rear toe link ball joint (15V031000). The complaint counts, 61 and 64, are nonetheless low, and both years are BUY.

The 2020 car is the first of the mid-engine generation and carries 4 campaigns, 3 safety-critical: the front trunk release button (20V461000), the software that lets the car be driven with the front trunk unlatched (20V489000), the driver's seat belt retractor (20V581000) and the electronic brake boost sensor (20V588000). It scores 78 on 34 complaints with Structure first at 10. The 2021 and 2022 cars score 89 and 88 on 12 and 20 complaints and share 22V091000 for rear half-shafts that may be missing ball bearings. The 2024 and 2025 cars carry 24V418000 (seat belt retractors that may lock in the stowed position) and 25V536000 (fuel that may spill into the filler pocket during refuelling), and the 2025 car has no complaints yet.

The 2013, 2016 and 2023 Corvettes have no complaints and no campaigns on this site and are marked DATA PENDING. They are not clean years; they are years with nothing to read.

The Camaro, 2011 to 2015

The fifth-generation Camaro's complaint count runs 194, 113, 187, 187 and 206 from 2011 to 2015, and the last three years are its highest. Air Bags leads the 2011 car with 69, and from 2013 Electrical System takes over and grows: 81, 99 and 111. Steering appears in the top five from 2013 (23, 32, 17), and campaign 14V409000 covers improperly torqued fasteners on the steering intermediate shaft on 2014 cars.

The campaign that defines these years is 14V346000, issued 20/06/2014 and safety-critical, covering all 2010 to 2014 Camaros because the driver may knock the ignition key out of the run position with a knee. Campaign 19E064000 later recalled replacement flip-key assemblies that dealers had sold for 2010 to 2015 cars. The 2012 car also has two campaigns, 13V023000 and 14V300000, for a shorting bar in the driver's frontal air bag, and the 2013 car has 23V516000 for a driver's inflator that may explode. The 2015 car, the CAUTION year, has only 2 campaigns, both safety-critical, and 111 Electrical System complaints; it is a year where the complaints outran the campaigns.

The Camaro, 2016 onward

The 2016 redesign cut complaints to 141 and lifted the score to 81, with Power Train first at 48. Then the 2017 car went the wrong way: 185 complaints, a score of 62, and Steering first at 57 with Power Train at 53. The steering has a documented cause: 19V086000 and 25V175000 recall the 2017 and the 2017 to 2018 Camaro because the electric power steering assist may fail, and the 2017 car has 3 campaigns, all safety-critical (the third is 21V211000, for the plastic emblem on the steering wheel air bag cover, which may separate in a deployment, 2017 to 2021).

From 2018 the Camaro's record is short and clean: 79 complaints and a score of 85 in 2018, then 31, 16 and 13 complaints in 2020, 2021 and 2022 with scores of 88, 87 and 93. Those three years have low evidence, and they carry campaigns worth knowing: 25V148000, issued 06/03/2025, for 2020 to 2022 cars with the ten-speed automatic whose transmission may be damaged internally and lock the wheels; 19V837000 for a 2020 fuel pump that may lack a pressure regulator; and 21V188000 for a 2021 axle shaft that may be missing a retaining ring. The 2019, 2023 and 2024 Camaros have no record on this site.

Camaro or Corvette?

By the record the Corvette is the better car outside its wheel years and the worse car inside them. Its complaint rate never exceeds 6.4 per year on the road in any year other than 2017 (28.3), 2019 (21.0) and 2024 (10.5); the Camaro's rate sits between 8.1 and 20.6 from 2011 to 2018. The Camaro's advantage is that it has no year as bad as the 2017 Corvette. Ranked: a 2011 to 2012 or 2021 to 2022 Corvette first; a 2018 or 2020 to 2022 Camaro second; a 2017 to 2019 Corvette last, behind every Camaro year.

What to check before you buy

  • On a 2017 to 2019 Corvette, inspect every wheel, inside and out, with the tyre off if the seller allows it, and treat any cracked or repaired wheel as a reason to walk away.
  • On a 2017 or 2018 Camaro or Corvette, confirm 19V086000 and 25V175000 have both been performed; the second was issued in 2025 and may still be open.
  • On a 2010 to 2014 Camaro, confirm 14V346000, and check that any replacement key is not one of the assemblies recalled under 19E064000.
  • On a 2020 to 2022 Camaro with the automatic, confirm 25V148000.
  • On a 2020 Corvette, confirm all four campaigns of that year, and on a 2024 or 2025 car the seat belt and fuel filler campaigns.

Summary

Avoid the 2017 and 2019 Corvette, and treat the 2018 car as suspect for the same reason. Treat the 2015 and 2017 Camaro with caution. Buy a 2011 to 2012 or 2021 to 2022 Corvette, or a 2018 or 2020 to 2022 Camaro, checking the steering and transmission campaigns before money changes hands.
