Used Cadillac SRX and XT5: the years to avoid

Exterior Lighting is the top complaint on every SRX year, 302 of the 2015 car's 442; the XT5 that replaced it has one bad year, 2017, and a thin, clean record after that.

The Cadillac SRX is a BUY in five of its six years on record and the record is still worth reading, because one component category, Exterior Lighting, is the top complaint on every one of them. The year to avoid is 2015, a CAUTION at 69 with 442 complaints, of which 302 are lighting; the year to buy is 2016, the SRX's last, at 88 on 168 complaints. The Cadillac XT5 that replaced it has one year to avoid, its first, 2017, an AVOID at 47 on 121 complaints, and is a BUY in every year from 2018 with scores between 73 and 88 on records that get thinner each year.

The SRX lighting complaint

The numbers are these. Exterior Lighting on the SRX: 198 complaints on the 2011 car, 233 on the 2012, 217 on the 2013, 266 on the 2014, 302 on the 2015 and 98 on the 2016. On the 2014 and 2015 cars it is more than half of everything owners reported (266 of 389, 302 of 442). The second component in those years never gets above 62 (Suspension, 2011), and on the 2015 car it is Electrical System at 44.

There is no lighting recall campaign on any SRX year. The 23 campaign entries across the six years are for other things, and the site treats an unaddressed pattern of this size as exactly what it is: a fault owners report year after year that the manufacturer has not been required to fix. The scores of 71 to 81 on the 2011 to 2014 cars reflect that the complaints are concentrated in one category outside the drivetrain; the CAUTION on the 2015 car reflects that its rate, 40.2 complaints per year on the road, is the highest of the six.

The rest of the SRX record

Underneath the lighting there are two patterns the recalls corroborate. Suspension is second on the 2011 car (62), third on the 2012 (41) and fourth on the 2015 (29), and two campaigns cover the rear suspension toe link: 14V571000, issued 19/09/2014 for 2010 to 2015 cars, and 21V473000, issued 24/06/2021 for 2010 to 2016 cars because the toe link adjuster may not have been tightened properly. The 2013 car carries 14V212000 for the transmission control module on 3.6-litre cars, describing a three to four second delay in certain driving situations, and Power Train (31) and Vehicle Speed Control (25) are both in the 2013 top five. The 2013 car also has 13V202000 for wheel lug nuts that may loosen on 18 inch wheels and 13V097000 for the automatic transmission.

The 2011 car has 7 campaigns, the most of any SRX year, including 11V308000 (air bags), 10V623000 (a seat belt buckle anchor that may fracture in a crash) and 11V149000 (the windscreen defroster). The latest campaign is 26V329000, issued 21/05/2026, for the driver's frontal air bag inflator on 2015 and 2016 cars; it is recent enough that most cars will not yet have had it done. The 2016 car, with 168 complaints and lighting down to 98, is the SRX to buy.

The XT5's first year

The XT5 replaced the SRX for 2017 and its first year is the only bad one: 121 complaints, a score of 47 and a verdict of AVOID. Unlike the SRX, the complaints are spread: Unknown Or Other 26, Power Train 25, Engine 23, Electrical System 21, Service Brakes 16. The single campaign on the 2017 car, 16V802000, is safety-critical and covers front brake calipers built in April and May 2016 that may have a torn or misaligned seal; it is shared with the 2017 GMC Acadia. The 2018 car cuts the complaints to 66 and scores 73 with Engine (15), Electrical System (14) and Steering (12) at the top and no campaigns at all.

The XT5 from 2019

From 2019 the XT5's scores are 88, 82, 88, 87, 81, 81 and 86, and its complaints are 32, 22, 14, 10, 15, 10 and 4. Every one of those years is marked low evidence. That is a clean record but a short one, and what fills it out is the recall list, which is longer than the complaint list suggests. The 2020 car has 5 campaigns: the fuel pump jet nozzle (20V639000), the roof-rail air bag diffuser (20V446000), two tyre campaigns (20V684000, 21V115000) and, for cars with Surround Vision, a rear camera cable (22V709000). The 2021 car has 21V422000 for fuel supply lines that may be improperly attached. The 2022 car has 22V427000 for a left-rear toe link, 22V446000 for the fuel tank rollover valve on all-wheel drive cars and 23V172000 for a transmission that may have been built with the wrong sun gear. The 2023 car has 23V043000 for right-front half-shafts that may separate and 24V459000 for an instrument panel that may not illuminate with the hazard lights or high beams. The 2024 car has 24V311000 for a driver's air bag cushion that may tear during deployment and 23V681000 for a windscreen that may lack its urethane sealant.

None of those campaigns has produced a complaint pattern, and the highest XT5 rate after 2018 is 5.0 per year on the road. The record says the XT5 from 2019 is a car that has been recalled more than it has been complained about.

SRX or XT5?

By the record the XT5 from 2018 beats every SRX year: its complaint rate never exceeds 8.2 per year on the road after 2017, and the SRX never gets below 16.8. The 2016 SRX is the best of the older car and a reasonable buy if the lighting has been dealt with. The 2017 XT5, at 47, ranks below every SRX year.

What to check before you buy

  • On any SRX, turn the headlamps on in the dark and look for condensation, dimming or a lamp that does not light; look at the lenses for moisture in daylight. Ask whether either headlamp assembly has been replaced and when.
  • On a 2011 to 2016 SRX, confirm 14V571000 and 21V473000 for the rear toe links and check the rear tyres for uneven wear.
  • On a 2015 or 2016 SRX, ask about 26V329000; it was issued in 2026 and is likely still open.
  • On a 2017 XT5, confirm 16V802000 and look for brake fluid at the front calipers.
  • On a 2020 to 2024 XT5, run the VIN against the campaigns of its year; the 2020 and 2023 cars carry the most.

Summary

Avoid the 2015 SRX and the 2017 XT5. Buy a 2016 SRX if the headlamps are sound, or any 2018 or later XT5, remembering that the XT5's scores from 2019 rest on very few complaints. Between the two, the newer car's record is the better one in every year it has.
