The five nameplates in this guide have thin complaint records and heavy recall records, and that combination is the whole story. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport has 259 owner complaints across twelve model years and 69 recall campaigns; the Land Rover Range Rover has 196 complaints and 74 campaigns. Both score BUY in every year but one, the 2020 Range Rover Sport, which is CAUTION at 67. The Jaguar XF has the only AVOID in the guide, 2011, at 41 on 80 complaints, and the best single year, 2016, at 94 on 5 complaints and no campaigns. The Jaguar I-Pace has two scored years, 2019 at 58 and 2020 at 74, and seven campaigns for a high-voltage battery that may overheat. The Land Rover Defender 110 has three scored years, all BUY, and no campaigns at all on record. The record says the risk on these cars is not in the complaint column but in whether the recall work has been done.

Range Rover Sport and Range Rover: the zero years

The two Range Rover tables have the same shape. The 2011 to 2013 cars carry complaints, 82, 52 and 59 on the Sport and 82, 45 and 54 on the Range Rover, mostly with medium evidence; then from 2014 to 2019 on the Sport, and 2014 to 2018 on the Range Rover, the complaint column reads zero, evidence is low, and the scores of 70 to 89 are built on the recall column. The 2011 component lists are identical on both: Structure 26, Fuel/Propulsion System 14, Engine 12, Fuel System 10, Gasoline 10. The Structure figure has a campaign behind it on the Sport, 20V623000, for a rear spoiler upper cover that may detach, and the fuel figures have 21V635000, issued 12 August 2021, for a fuel outlet flange on the tank that may crack on 2011 to 2013 Sports with the 3.0-litre V6 or 5.0-litre V8. The 2011 to 2012 Range Rover has 15V039000, issued 27 January 2015, for front brake hoses that may rupture, and three regional passenger air bag inflator campaigns, 18V015000, 16V374000 and 17V015000.

The recall count peaks in the zero years. The 2016 Range Rover has 12 campaigns, seven safety-critical, and the 2017 car eight, all eight safety-critical; the 2016 Sport has 11, six safety-critical. Five door latch campaigns run through 2013 to 2016 on both cars: 15V385000, 19V390000, 19V392000, and the two re-repairs 20V325000 and 20V387000, all for a keyless latching system whose doors may appear closed but be unlatched. Then come 17V154000 and 16V941000 for a passenger air bag inflator initiator that may fail to ignite on 2016 cars, and 19V350000 and 22V219000 for a driver's seat belt retractor that may not lock on 2016 to 2017 cars. The most recent are structural: 24V840000, issued 7 November 2024 for 2014 to 2016 Range Rovers, and 25V514000, issued 8 August 2025 for 2014 to 2017 cars of both nameplates, for a front suspension upper knuckle joint that may crack and let the suspension arm detach, and 26V527000, issued 13 August 2026, for 2016 to 2017 Range Rovers that received the wrong knuckles during that repair.

The 2020 Sport is the one year with a verdict below BUY: 41 complaints, 6.8 per year on the road, score 67, with Electrical System at 15 and Engine at 9. Its campaigns include 23V044000, issued 2 February 2023 for 2019 to 2022 Sports and 2020 to 2022 Range Rovers, for an engine cam carrier oil channel that may be blocked, and 26V248000, issued 17 April 2026, for a DC/DC converter.

Jaguar XF: the 2011 to 2013 problem

The 2011 XF has 80 complaints, 5.3 per year on the road, and four campaigns, all safety-critical; Air Bags and Fuel/Propulsion System lead with 23 each, Fuel System and Gasoline with 11 each. The fuel figures match 12V521000, issued 26 October 2012, for a fuel tank outlet flange that may crack on 2010 to 2012 cars with the 5.0-litre engine, and the air bag figure matches the inflator campaigns, 16V229000, 16V373000 and 18V010000, that reach the 2011 car. The 2012 car has 38 complaints and scores 62, the 2013 car 34 and scores 55, and the 2013 car has 12 campaigns, eight of them safety-critical, as many as any year in this guide. They include two fuel pump control module campaigns, 12V571000 and 15V091000, two charge air cooler hose clamp campaigns, 13V341000 and 14V181000, on the 2.0-litre engine, 14V291000 for a rear brake pipe that may wear through, and 14V157000 for rear toe links that can separate from the subframe.

From 2014 the XF is quiet: 11, 19, 5, 5 and 2 complaints a year through 2018, scores of 73 to 94. The 2016 car has no campaigns at all. The 2017 and 2018 cars have 17V678000 for an instrument cluster that may go blank and 18V090000 for fuel rail end caps that may leak on the 2.0-litre engine. The 2019 and 2020 cars are DATA PENDING.

I-Pace and Defender 110

The I-Pace record is two years long and dominated by one component. The 2019 car has 148 complaints, 21.1 per year on the road, of which 122 are Electrical System; the 2020 car has 52, of which 39 are Electrical System. The campaign list explains the number: 23V369000, issued 25 May 2023, for a high-voltage battery that may overheat, then 23V709000 for cars whose first repair failed, 24V085000, 24V183000, 24V633000 and 24V927000 across 2024 for the same fault and its interim repairs, and 26V067000, issued 5 February 2026, for 2020 cars. Alongside these is 24V086000, for battery module fasteners that may arc. Eight campaigns on the 2019 car, all safety-critical, and eight on the 2020, seven safety-critical, on a nameplate two years old.

The Defender 110 is the opposite case: 178 complaints across 2022 to 2024 and no campaigns on record. The 2022 car has 72 complaints and scores 85, the 2023 car 81 and scores 75, the 2024 car 25 and scores 89. Electrical System leads every year, at 25, 39 and 14, with Visibility/Wiper second in 2022 and 2023 at 13 and 14. The 2020, 2021 and 2025 cars are DATA PENDING.

Ranking the five

By the record: the XF from 2014 onward first, for the only run of years with both low complaints and a short recall list; the Defender 110 second, with medium-evidence scores of 75 to 89 and nothing outstanding to check; the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport third and fourth, carrying 74 and 69 campaigns, with the 2018 and 2019 cars the cleanest on both; the I-Pace fifth, because its one component problem is the traction battery and its campaigns have been reissued repeatedly. Avoid the 2011 XF and treat the 2012 and 2013 XF and the 2020 Range Rover Sport as CAUTION.

What to check before you buy

  • On any 2013 to 2016 Range Rover or 2014 to 2016 Range Rover Sport, ask for all five door latch campaigns by number, and check each door latches with the key fob in your pocket.
  • On any 2014 to 2017 Range Rover or Sport, ask for 25V514000 and, on a Range Rover, 24V840000 and 26V527000, for the front suspension knuckle.
  • On a 2019 to 2022 Sport or 2020 to 2022 Range Rover, ask for 23V044000 on the engine oil channel.
  • On a 2011 to 2013 XF, ask for 12V521000 on 5.0-litre cars and the 2013 list above on 2.0-litre cars, and confirm the air bag inflator campaigns are closed.
  • On an I-Pace, ask for the battery campaign history in full, including which of the 2023 and 2024 repairs was actually performed, and see 24V086000 listed as done.
  • On a Defender 110, test every electrical function and both wipers; there are no campaigns to check, so the inspection is the record.

Summary

Avoid the 2011 Jaguar XF (80 complaints, score 41). Treat the 2012 and 2013 XF and the 2020 Range Rover Sport as CAUTION, and the 2019 I-Pace, at 148 complaints, as a car to buy only with its battery campaigns documented. Buy a 2014 to 2018 XF, a 2022 to 2024 Defender 110, or a 2018 or 2019 Range Rover or Range Rover Sport with the recall work confirmed on the VIN.
