The Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon are the same truck with different badges and the record treats them that way: both score 29 in 2015, their worst year, with Steering the top complaint on both (356 on the Colorado, 226 on the Canyon), and both are AVOID again in 2023 and 2024 (Colorado 46 and 40, Canyon 45 and 39). The years to buy are 2019 to 2022 on the Colorado (81, 90, 86, 89) and 2017 to 2022 on the Canyon (82, 84, 95, 94, 90, 87). The Honda Ridgeline has never had a year as bad as the General Motors trucks' worst, nor one as good as their best: its scores from 2017 to 2024 run from 60 to 85, with CAUTION on 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2023 and an AVOID, on thin evidence, for 2025.
2015 and 2016: the steering year
The Colorado and Canyon were reintroduced for 2015 after a gap (there is no 2013 or 2014 truck on the record) and the first year was bad in one specific way. The 2015 Colorado has 489 complaints, 44.5 per year on the road, and 356 of them are Steering; the next category, Electronic Stability Control, is 56. The 2015 Canyon has 319 complaints and 226 are Steering. The 2016 Canyon carries it on: 267 complaints, Steering 177, score 39. The 2016 to 2018 Colorados have no record on this site, so the Canyon is the only witness for those years.
The steering has a documented cause. Campaign 16V054000, issued 01/02/2016, covers 2015 Colorados and Canyons built in early 2015 because a poor electrical connection within the steering gear could cause a loss of power steering assist, and 21V213000, issued 25/03/2021, repeats it for the 2015 trucks. Around them the 2015 trucks carry a long list: the Colorado has 7 campaigns, 6 safety-critical, and the Canyon 8, 7 safety-critical, including 14V645000 (driver air bag connections wired incorrectly), 15V157000 (driver air bag inflator), 15V278000 (front brake calipers that may leak fluid), 15V267000 (seat frame hooks) and 17V621000 (the driver's frontal air bag may improperly inflate at the second stage). The 2016 Canyon adds 16V125000 for frontal air bags.
2017 to 2022: the good trucks
From 2017 the record on the Canyon is as clean as any pickup on this site: 65, 52, 16, 14, 11 and 25 complaints from 2017 to 2022, with scores of 82, 84, 95, 94, 90 and 87, and Power Train the top component in 2017 and 2018 (18 and 27). The 2019 to 2022 years have low evidence on those counts. The Colorado, back on record from 2019, is close behind: 149, 82, 73 and 51 complaints, scores of 81, 90, 86 and 89, with Power Train first in 2019 (65) and 2020 (32) and Engine first in 2021 (18). The campaigns on those years are few: 18V358000 for the high pressure fuel pump on 2015 to 2018 Canyons, 20V811000 for seat belts on 2021 trucks and 22V375000 for a passenger seat hook weld on 2022 trucks.

The 2023 redesign
The trucks were redesigned for 2023, and both dropped to AVOID. The 2023 Colorado has 131 complaints and scores 46; the 2024 truck 121 at 60.5 per year on the road and a score of 40. The 2023 Canyon has 59 complaints and scores 45; the 2024 Canyon 205 complaints at 102.5 per year, the highest rate of any truck in this guide, and a score of 39. The components are new ones. Forward Collision Avoidance is first on the 2023 Colorado with 45 and second on the 2023 Canyon with 18, a point behind Electrical System; campaign 24V133000, issued 22/02/2024 for 2023 trucks, is the reason: the front camera module may falsely detect an obstacle and engage automatic emergency braking. Electrical System is first on the 2024 Colorado with 35. On the 2024 Canyon the story is Exterior Lighting, 159 of its 205 complaints, and campaign 24V673000, issued 12/09/2024, covers headlights that may flicker while driving and in park.
The other campaigns on the 2023 to 2024 trucks are 24V703000 (a seat belt buckle bolt not tightened), 24V237000 (front wheel hub bolts over-tightened), 24V491000 (a fuel pump lock ring that may leak fuel in a crash) and, on the 2024 Colorado, 24V366000 for tyres that may not match the label. The 2025 trucks score 77 and 82 on 27 and 8 complaints, both low evidence; it looks like a recovery, but it is too early to call it one.

The Ridgeline
The Ridgeline's record is different in shape. Its complaint counts are moderate every year (337 in 2017, then 232, 168, 100, 113, 126, 54 and 81 from 2019 to 2025, with no 2018 record) and its recall counts are high: 9 campaigns on the 2017 truck, 12 on the 2019, 9 on the 2020, 7 on the 2021, 48 in all. Electrical System leads the 2017 truck with 92, and campaign 16V888000, from 09/12/2016, explains part of it: water may enter the rear wiring harness through a connector under the bed drain hole on all-wheel drive trucks. Fuel/Propulsion System is third on the 2017 truck (42) and Fuel System and Gasoline lead the 2019 (39 each); campaign 19V053000, issued 24/01/2019 for 2017 to 2019 trucks, covers a fuel pump feed port that can crack when exposed to car wash acids, and 23V858000 covers the fuel pump again on 2017 to 2020 trucks. Engine is second on the 2017 truck (81) and 23V751000, issued 13/11/2023, covers connecting rod bearings on 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines.
From 2021 the pattern shifts to Exterior Lighting, first on the 2022 (30) and 2023 (39) trucks and second on the 2024 (13) and 2025 (23), with no lighting campaign to match it. The rear camera has two campaigns, 22V867000 (2017 to 2019) and 24V321000 (2020 to 2024), both for a tailgate wiring harness that breaks with use. The 2023 truck, a CAUTION at 64, carries 24V184000, safety-critical, for a steering gearbox ball joint housing that may detach, and 23V458000 for the brake master cylinder fastener on 2020 to 2023 trucks. Two campaigns issued in 2026 reach back across the range: 26V365000 for frame corrosion on 2017 to 2023 trucks sold in the salt states, and 26V332000 for the front passenger occupant sensor. The 2021 (76), 2022 (80) and 2024 (85) trucks are the Ridgeline's BUY years; the 2025 AVOID rests on 81 complaints in one year.

How they rank
In their good years the General Motors trucks are better than the Ridgeline: a 2019 to 2021 Canyon at 2.2 to 2.3 complaints per year on the road has no equivalent in the Honda record, whose best rate is 20.0. In their bad years they are much worse: nothing on the Ridgeline approaches 356 Steering complaints or a score of 29. The Canyon ranks first for 2017 to 2022, the Colorado second for 2019 to 2022, and the Ridgeline third but steadier. For 2023 and 2024 the order inverts: the Ridgeline's 64 and 85 beat every General Motors score.
What to check before you buy
- On a 2015 Colorado or Canyon, confirm both 16V054000 and 21V213000 and drive the truck at low speed from lock to lock, watching for the assist dropping out.
- On any 2015 to 2016 truck, run the VIN against the air bag campaigns (14V645000, 15V157000, 17V621000, 16V125000) and the brake caliper campaign 15V278000.
- On a 2023 Colorado or Canyon, confirm 24V133000 and drive it past parked cars and under bridges to see whether the emergency braking triggers on nothing.
- On a 2024 Canyon, confirm 24V673000 and watch the headlamps at idle; on any 2024 truck, confirm 24V491000 for the fuel pump lock ring.
- On a 2017 to 2019 Ridgeline, confirm 19V053000 and 23V751000, check for a rear camera that drops out when the tailgate is used, and on a salt-state truck ask about 26V365000 and look at the frame.
Summary
Avoid the 2015 Colorado and Canyon, the 2016 Canyon and the 2023 to 2024 trucks of both badges. Buy a 2017 to 2022 Canyon or a 2019 to 2022 Colorado, with the 2019 to 2021 Canyon the cleanest mid-size pickup on this site. Buy a 2021, 2022 or 2024 Ridgeline if you want the Honda, checking the fuel pump, camera and frame campaigns, and treat its other years with caution.
