The Porsche 944 is a 2-door coupé / 2-door convertible from Porsche, built from 1982 to 1991, in the age of turbocharging and the first electronic engine management. Under the bonnet: 2.5&nbsp. Harm Lagaay (Porsche AG) drew it.

How it came about

The Porsche 944 is a two-door sports car that was manufactured and marketed by Porsche from 1982 until 1991. A front-engine, rear-wheel drive model based on the platform of the 924, the 944 was available in coupé or cabriolet body styles, with either naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines.

With over 163,000 cars produced, the 944 was the most successful sports car in Porsche's history until the introductions of the Boxster and 997 Carrera. Extensive design revisions for the 1992 model year prompted Porsche to drop the 944 nameplate and rebrand the vehicle as the 968.

The hardware

Power comes from 2.5  other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It weighs 1180 kg. It shifts through a 3-speed Automatic transmission / automatic / 5-speed Manual transmission / manual. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 2400 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

Its family tree is legible: it took over from the Porsche 924; its successor was the Porsche 968; assembly was at Neckarsulm, Stuttgart, Germany. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Opel Corsa, the Nissan Micra, the Toyota Camry — show what else the money bought that year. Its Porsche stablemates include the Porsche P1 and the Porsche Type 12.

What it costs now

There is no federal ownership record for the Porsche 944 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
