Start with what the Porsche 968 is: a 2-door coupé / 2-door convertible with 3.0&nbsp, built from 1991 to 1995, when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Harm Lagaay (Porsche AG).

The story

The Porsche 968 is a sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche AG from 1991 until 1995. It was the final evolution of a series of water-cooled front-engine rear wheel drive models begun almost 20 years earlier with the 924. The 968 replaced the 944 from which it was derived. The 968 was Porsche's last new front-engined vehicle until the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne in 2003.

What is underneath

The engine is 3.0  other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 1400 kg. Drive goes through a 6-speed Manual transmission / manual / 4-speed Tiptronic Automatic transmission / automatic. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 2400 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

In the Porsche line-up the Porsche 968 has a clear place: it replaced the Porsche 944; it handed the line to the Porsche Boxster (986); the factory was Stuttgart, Germany. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Dodge Viper, the Volvo 850, the Opel Astra. Nearby in the Porsche catalogue sit the Porsche P1 and the Porsche Type 12.
