Start with what the Peugeot 205 is: a 3/5-door hatchback / 2-door convertible / 3/4-door panel van with Petrol engine, built from 1983 to 1999, in the age of turbocharging and the first electronic engine management. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Gerard Welter / Pininfarina (cabriolet). 5,278,300 were built.

How it came about

The Peugeot 205 is a supermini (B-segment) car manufactured and marketed by Peugeot from 1983 to 1999 over a single generation. Developed from Projet M24 and introduced on 25 February 1983, the 205 replaced the Peugeot 104 and the Talbot Samba, using some elements from their design. It won What Car?'s Car of the Year for 1984.

It was also declared "car of the decade" by CAR Magazine in 1990. Peugeot stopped marketing the 205 in 1999 in favor of its new front-engined 206. The 106, which was introduced in 1991, effectively took over as Peugeot's smaller front-engined model in their lineup. The latter was developed as a close sibling of the Citroën AX, sharing many components and a platform that later evolved into the Citroën Saxo.

The hardware

The engine is Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 740 -. Drive goes through a 4-speed ZF 4HP14 transmission / ZF 4HP14 Automatic transmission / automatic / 4/5-speed Manual transmission / manual. The wheelbase is 2420 mm / 2540 mm (205 T16). These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Peugeot line-up the Peugeot 205 has a clear place: it replaced the Peugeot 104 / Talbot Samba / Peugeot 204; it handed the line to the Peugeot 106 / Peugeot 206; the factory was Mulhouse (PSA Mulhouse Plant. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Toyota 4Runner, the Honda Civic, the Fiat Uno. Its Peugeot stablemates include the Peugeot Onyx and the Peugeot Pars.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Peugeot 205 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
