Numbers first, because with the BYD Shark they are the story: Petrol engine, 321 kW. Byd built from 2024, in the decade the industry is turning electric. The shape is credited to Under the lead of Wolfgang Egger (exterior) / Under the lead of Michele Jauch Paganetti (interior).

Where it came from

The BYD Shark 6 (also called the BYD Shark in some markets) is a plug-in hybrid mid-size pickup truck manufactured by the Chinese auto manufacturing company BYD Auto. The vehicle debuted in Mexico in May 2024 as the first light utility vehicle model made by BYD.

It is based on a body-on-frame chassis with a Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) hybrid drivetrain, similar to the platform used on the Denza B5. The model will be marketed in China in 2026 under the Fangchengbao brand, as the Fangchengbao Shark (Chinese: 方程豹鲨鱼; pinyin: Fāngchéngbào Shāyú).

Under the skin

The engine is Petrol engine; the output is 321 kW; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 2600-2775 kg. That is roughly 123 horsepower per tonne: brisk everyday performance. Drive goes through a Single Speed DMO. The layout matters: drive goes to all four wheels, which is what lets the power be used on a wet road. The wheelbase is 3260 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

In context

In the Byd line-up the BYD Shark has a clear place: the factory was Zhengzhou, Henan, China. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Nissan Z, the Geely Galaxy E8, the Changan Automobile Nevo E07. Nearby in the Byd catalogue sit the BYD 8TT and the BYD Atto 2.
