Byd does not build many cars like the BYD D1: a 5-door hatchback, built from 2020 to 2023 in the decade the industry is turning electric.

How it came about

The BYD D1 is a purpose-built electric compact multi purpose vehicle (MPV) developed by BYD in cooperation with DiDi exclusively developed for ride-hailing services.

Under the skin

The record carries the shape — a 5-door hatchback — and the layout: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The engine, output and weight have not yet reached the open record, and MotorJury does not guess at them.

Family and rivals

Where it sits in Byd's history is not in doubt: it was built at Changsha, China. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Tesla Model Y, the Kia EV6, the Porsche Taycan. Its Byd stablemates include the BYD 8TT and the BYD Atto 2.
