Numbers first, because with the BYD Frigate 07 they are the story: Petrol engine, 102 kW. Byd built from 2022 to 2025, in the decade the industry is turning electric. Under the lead of Wolfgang Egger drew it.

Where it came from

The BYD Frigate 07 (Chinese: 比亚迪护卫舰07; pinyin: Bǐyǎdí Hùwèijiàn 07), also translated in English sources as the BYD Corvette 07 is a plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV manufactured by Chinese automaker BYD Auto. The second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) of BYD's new "Ocean Series" of plug-in electric vehicles, the Frigate 07 is equipped with the DM-i hybrid technology, and the additional DM-p performance oriented hybrid technology from the PHEVs of the BYD Dynasty series.

Under the skin

Power comes from Petrol engine; 102 kW is the published figure; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It weighs 2047–2270 kg. Work it out per tonne and you get about 50 horsepower — leisurely, which for a car of its age and purpose is the point. It shifts through a E-CVT. The wheelbase is 2820 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

In context

Its family tree is legible: its successor was the BYD Sealion 07 DM-i/DM-p; assembly was at Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Kia EV6, the JAC Group Sehol X6, the Great Wall Motor Great Wall Shanhai Cannon — show what else the money bought that year. Nearby in the Byd catalogue sit the BYD 8TT and the BYD Atto 2.
