Start with what the Porsche 695 is: a 2-door coupe, built from 1961, in the decade that gave the world the pony car and the mid-engined supercar. What it meant takes a little longer.

How it came about

The Porsche Typ 754 T7, also known as the T7 Prototype or 695, is a prototype automobile built by Porsche in 1961. It would later become the Porsche 911. The front end is very similar to the 911, but the rear is somewhat different.

Also, unlike the 911, the T7 had four seats. The T7 was developed from the Porsche 356 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, and has a wheelbase that is 100 mm (3.9 in) longer (up to 300 mm (11.8 in) longer in early designs). It has a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). The car is currently on display at the Porsche Museum, Stuttgart.

Under the skin

The record carries the shape — a 2-door coupe — and the layout: the engine hangs behind the rear axle, a layout that gives ferocious traction out of a corner and a reputation to match on the way in. The engine, output and weight have not yet reached the open record, and MotorJury does not guess at them.

Family and rivals

The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Nissan Patrol, the Dodge Challenger, the Mini Mini. Its Porsche stablemates include the Porsche P1 and the Porsche Type 12.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Porsche 695 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
