Start with what the Mercury Mariner is: a 5-door SUV with Petrol engine, built from 2004 to 2010, in the decade of stability control, dual-clutch gearboxes and the first serious hybrids. What it meant takes a little longer.

How it came about

The Mercury Mariner is a compact crossover SUV that was introduced for the 2005 model year. It is a sibling of the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape, although it is more upmarket than the other two. The Mariner is Mercury's first car-based SUV, and is slotted below the Mountaineer in the lineup. When Ford eliminated the Mercury brand, the Mariner ended production in October 2010. The Mariner was officially offered in the United States, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.

The hardware

The engine is Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. Drive goes through a 4-speed automatic / 6-speed automatic. The wheelbase is 103.1 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Mercury line-up the Mercury Mariner has a clear place: it handed the line to the Lincoln MKC; the factory was Claycomo, Missouri. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Ford Mustang, the Suzuki Swift, the Chrysler 300. Its Mercury stablemates include the Mercury Bobcat and the Mercury Capri.
