Start with what the Suzuki Swift is: a 3-door hatchback (2004–2017) / 5-door hatchback (2004–present) with Petrol engine, built from 2004 to 1984, in the decade of stability control, dual-clutch gearboxes and the first serious hybrids. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Yasukazu Yuki and Hirohito Matsumoto.

How it came about

The Suzuki Swift (Japanese: スズキ・スイフト, Hepburn: Suzuki Suifuto) is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1984.

The Swift became its own model in 2004. Currently, the Swift is positioned between Ignis and Baleno in Suzuki's global hatchback lineup. Since its introduction as a global model in 2004, the Swift has sold 10 million units as of September 2025.

The hardware

The engine is Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 1000 -. Drive goes through a 5-speed Aisin manual transmission / manual / 4-speed Aisin automatic transmission / automatic / Jatco Continuously variable transmission / CVT. The wheelbase is 2390 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Suzuki line-up the Suzuki Swift has a clear place: it replaced the Suzuki Cultus#SF / Suzuki Cultus/Swift hatchback / Suzuki Cultus Crescent / Suzuki Baleno hatchback (integrated); the factory was Kosai, Shizuoka. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Hyundai Tucson, the Chrysler 300, the Ford Mustang. Its Suzuki stablemates include the Suzuki XL-7 and the Suzuki Landy.
