Byd does not build many cars like the BYD Tang: a 5-door crossover SUV with 2.0 L BYD487ZQA I4 turbo petrol, built from 2015 as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market.
Where it came from
The BYD Tang (Chinese: 比亚迪唐) is a series of mid-size SUV manufactured by BYD Auto, available as a battery electric, a plug-in hybrid or formerly a conventional ICE vehicle. The vehicle is the second model of BYD's "Dynasty" series passenger vehicles after the Qin, and gets its name from the Tang dynasty, the most prosperous of all the great Chinese dynasties. The first-generation BYD Tang was introduced at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show and was available as a plug-in hybrid only.
Retail deliveries began in China in June 2015. The second-generation BYD Tang debuted at Auto China in April 2018. The battery electric variant went on sale in Europe (in Norway) in 2021.
Under the skin
Under the skin sits 2.0 L BYD487ZQA I4 turbo petrol. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2720 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
In context
Where it sits in Byd's history is not in doubt: the BYD S6/S7 came before it. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Chevrolet Camaro, the Ford Escort, the Ferrari 488. Nearby in the Byd catalogue sit the BYD 8TT and the BYD Atto 2.
