The Lada XRAY is a 5-door hatchback from Lada, built from 2015 to 2022, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market. Under the bonnet: Gasoline engine. Steve Mattin drew it.
The background
The Lada XRAY is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ. Designed by a team led by Steve Mattin, the chief designer of the Lada Vesta, it was first presented as a concept in August 2012 at the Moscow International Automobile Salon.
A newer version, the Lada XRAY Concept 2, debuted in August 2014. The production version of the Lada XRAY was released for sale in early 2016 and ceased in 2022 for unavailability of parts due to the international sanctions after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The engineering
Power comes from Gasoline engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It shifts through a 5-speed manual / 5-speed automated manual / Jatco CVT. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2592 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Where it sits
Its family tree is legible: its successor was the Lada Azimut; assembly was at Tolyatti, Samara Oblast, Russia. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Chevrolet Camaro, the Ferrari 488, the Ford Escort — show what else the money bought that year. Its Lada stablemates include the LADA Granta and the LADA Kalina.
