Start with what the Bugatti Tourbillon is: a 2-door coupé with 8355 cc Cosworth V16, built from 2026, in the decade the industry is turning electric. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Frank Heyl.

How it came about

The Bugatti Tourbillon is a mid-engine hybrid sports car manufactured by French automobile manufacturer Bugatti. The Tourbillon succeeds the Chiron and is limited to 250 units. It was unveiled in an online live stream on 20 June 2024. It is priced at €3.8 million (US$4.1 million). The car is named after the tourbillon, a mechanism used in certain high end mechanical watches to increase their accuracy.

The hardware

The engine is 8355 cc Cosworth V16. On the scales it comes to 1995 kg. Drive goes through a 8-speed DCT. The layout matters: the engine sits behind the driver and ahead of the rear axle, which puts the mass in the middle of the car and is why mid-engined cars change direction the way they do. The wheelbase is 2740 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Bugatti line-up the Bugatti Tourbillon has a clear place: it replaced the Bugatti Chiron; the factory was Molsheim (Bugatti Molsheim Plant), France. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Tesla Cybertruck, the Kia EV2, the Jeep Recon. Its Bugatti stablemates include the Bugatti 57 Galibier and the Bugatti 8-cylinder line.
