The Audi A6 is a 4-door saloon/sedan / 5-door Avant (estate) from Audi, built from 1994 to 2000, when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. Under the bonnet: Petrol engine. Hartmut Warkuß (1992) drew it.

The story

The Audi A6 is an executive car manufactured by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its sixth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, C8 and the C9.

The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation. All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999. The battery-electric model is sold as the A6 e-tron.

What is underneath

Power comes from Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It shifts through a 5/6-speed manual / 4/5-speed automatic. The wheelbase is 2687 mm (FWD) / 2692 mm (AWD). These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

Its family tree is legible: it took over from the Audi 100; assembly was at Neckarsulm. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Subaru Outback, the Toyota RAV4, the BMW Z3 — show what else the money bought that year. Nearby in the Audi catalogue sit the Audi 200 and the Audi 225.

What it costs now

The money question first: $13,300–$65,000 is the typical asking range today, and running it — fuel and maintenance at its age — costs about $3,405–$7,427 a year. Insurance sits around $1,490–$3,420 a year. The figures are class-level estimates from the federal record, with the formula on the methodology page; the model-year pages carry complaints, recalls and repair costs year by year.
