Audi does not build many cars like the Audi 80: a 2/4-door saloon / 5-door estate with 1.3 , built from 1966 to 1996 in the decade that gave the world the pony car and the mid-engined supercar. Its designer of record is Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign.
The background
The Audi 80 is a compact executive car produced by the Audi subdivision of the Volkswagen Group across four generations from 1966 to 1996. It shared its platform with the Volkswagen Passat from 1973 to 1986 and was available as a saloon, and estate — the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant.
The coupé and convertible models were not badged as members of the range, but used a derivative of the same platforms. In North America and Australia, the 80 was marketed as the Audi Fox for model years 1973–1979, as the Audi 4000 for model years 1980–1987 in the US, as Audi 4000 5+5 from 1981 in the US, and Audi 5+5 in Australia during 1981 through 1983. The Audi 90 was an upmarket version of the Audi 80, although all North American sedans of the B4 generation were called Audi 90.
The engineering
Under the skin sits 1.3 other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. The gearbox is a 4-speed manual / 3-speed automatic. The wheelbase is 2470 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Where it sits
Where it sits in Audi's history is not in doubt: the Audi F103 came before it; the Audi A4 (Saloon and Avant) / Audi A5 (Coupé and Cabriolet) followed it; it was built at Ingolstadt. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Dodge Charger, the Alfa Romeo Spider, the Lamborghini Miura. Its Audi stablemates include the Audi 200 and the Audi 225.
The money
There is no federal ownership record for the Audi 80 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
