Peugeot does not build many cars like the Peugeot 309: a 3/5-door hatchback/liftback with Petrol engine, built from 1985 to 1997 in the age of turbocharging and the first electronic engine management.

The background

The Peugeot 309 is a small family car that was manufactured between 1985 and 1994 in France, England and Spain by PSA Peugeot Citroën. It was originally intended to be badged as a Talbot and, as development progressed, to be called the Talbot Arizona.

It was the replacement for the Talbot Horizon, which had started life as a Chrysler in Britain and a Simca in France, and was also being built in several guises for the market in America. In 1985, the PSA Group decided to discontinue the Talbot brand, with the last passenger vehicle branded as a Talbot to be launched being the Samba of 1981, and to market the car as a Peugeot instead. The Talbot brand was phased out completely when Talbot Express production stopped in 1994.

The engineering

Under the skin sits Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. The gearbox is a 4-speed Manual transmission / manual / 5-speed manual / 3-speed Automatic transmission / automatic / 4-speed ZF 4HP14 transmission / ZF 4HP14 automatic. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2470 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

Where it sits in Peugeot's history is not in doubt: the Chrysler-Talbot Horizon / Peugeot 305 came before it; the Peugeot 306 followed it; it was built at Poissy (Stellantis Poissy Plant. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Ferrari Testarossa, the Jeep Wrangler, the Renault Espace. Its Peugeot stablemates include the Peugeot Onyx and the Peugeot Pars.

The money

There is no federal ownership record for the Peugeot 309 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
