Start with what the Mercury Park Lane is: a 2-door hardtop coupe / 2-door convertible / 4-door hardtop sedan with 430 cid Ford MEL V8, built from 1958 to 1968, at the height of the post-war boom. What it meant takes a little longer.

The story

The Mercury Park Lane is a full-sized automobile that was produced by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. While not officially introduced as the replacement of the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, the Park Lane became the flagship of the Mercury model line upon its introduction. The second-generation Park Lane was positioned above the Mercury Montclair. In 1969, the Mercury Marquis was expanded to a full model line and replaced the Park Lane in the Mercury range.

What is underneath

The engine is 430 cid Ford MEL V8. On the scales it comes to 2070 kg. Drive goes through a 3-speed Merc-O-Matic. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 125.0 in / 126.0 in / 128.0 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

In the Mercury line-up the Mercury Park Lane has a clear place: it replaced the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser; it handed the line to the Mercury S-55; the factory was Main plant. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Fiat 500, the Nissan Patrol, the Mini Mini. Nearby in the Mercury catalogue sit the Mercury Bobcat and the Mercury Capri.

Owning one today

MotorJury scores cars on the United States complaint and recall record, and the Mercury Park Lane has none: too old, too rare, or never sold there. Its value today is a collector's question, decided by provenance and condition rather than by a class average.
