Every car is an argument about what matters, and the McLaren GT makes its case with 4.0&nbsp and 620 PS. Mclaren built from 2019 to 2024 — as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market. The shape is credited to Rob Melville.

The story

The McLaren GT is a two seat grand tourer designed and manufactured by the British automobile manufacturer McLaren Automotive. It is the company's first dedicated grand tourer and is based on the same platform underpinning the 720S with the addition of a carbon fibre rear deck topped by a glazed tailgate creating significantly greater storage capacity. The GT was first announced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, but full details of the car were not released until May 15 of the same year.

What is underneath

The engine is 4.0  the output is 620 PS. On the scales it comes to 1530 kg. That is roughly 405 horsepower per tonne: hypercar territory, where the limiting factor is the tyre, not the engine. Drive goes through a 7-speed dual-clutch. The layout matters: the engine sits behind the driver and ahead of the rear axle, which puts the mass in the middle of the car and is why mid-engined cars change direction the way they do. The wheelbase is 2670 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

In the Mclaren line-up the McLaren GT has a clear place: it replaced the McLaren 570GT; it handed the line to the McLaren GTS; the factory was Woking, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Nissan Z, the Ferrari F8, the Aston Martin Valhalla. Nearby in the Mclaren catalogue sit the McLaren M15 and the McLaren M16.
