Lotus does not build many cars like the Lotus Emeya: a 5-door liftback sedan, built from 2024 in the decade the industry is turning electric. Its designer of record is Ben Payne.
The background
The Lotus Emeya is a battery electric executive car manufactured by the Chinese-owned British sports car manufacturer Lotus Cars, with production beginning in 2024. Described by Lotus as a "hyper GT", it is a grand tourer with a five-door liftback body style.
It was revealed on 7 September 2023 as the company's third electric vehicle - following the Eletre and the Evija - and second vehicle produced in China, after the aforementioned Eletre. The car is positioned by Lotus to compete with Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, and Audi e-tron GT.
The engineering
it is rated at 592 hp. Kerb weight is 2550 kg. Power-to-weight lands near 232 horsepower per tonne, which is quick by any era's standard, the kind of figure a hot hatch or a sports saloon posts. The gearbox is a 1-speed direct-drive (2-speed, rear motor of the R-series). The layout matters: drive goes to all four wheels, which is what lets the power be used on a wet road. The wheelbase is 3070 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Where it sits
Where it sits in Lotus's history is not in doubt: it was built at Wuhan, Hubei (Wuhan Lotus Technology), China. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Nissan Z, the Cadillac Escalade IQ, the Cadillac Celestiq. Its Lotus stablemates include the Lotus 100T and the Lotus 101.
