Jeep does not build many cars like the Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) with 2.5&nbsp, built from 1992 to 1998 when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. Its designer of record is Larry Shinoda (1985).

The story

The Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) is the first generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle. Introduced in 1992 for the 1993 model year, development of the ZJ Grand Cherokee began under American Motors Corporation (AMC) as a mid-sized successor to the compact Jeep Cherokee (XJ) intended to replace both it and the aging Jeep Wagoneer (SJ). The XJ version was continued after AMC was acquired by Chrysler in 1987. Export models produced at the plant in Graz, Austria, were designated "ZG".

What is underneath

Under the skin sits 2.5&nbsp. Kerb weight is 3574 lb. The gearbox is a 4-speed Aisin AW-4 automatic / 5-speed Aisin AX-15 manual (1993-1995 4.0L) / 4-speed 42RE automatic / 4-speed 44RE automatic / 4-speed 46RH automatic / 4-speed 46RE automatic. The wheelbase is 105.9 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

Where it sits in Jeep's history is not in doubt: the Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ) / Jeep Wagoneer Limited / Jeep Cherokee (SJ) came before it; the Grand Cherokee (WJ) followed it; it was built at Detroit, Michigan, United States. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Renault Twingo, the Subaru Impreza, the GM (General Motors) Hummer H1. Nearby in the Jeep catalogue sit the Jeep Wrangler (JK) and the Jeep Wrangler (TJ).

The money

On the used market today a Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) typically changes hands for $10,600–$52,000, and running it — fuel and maintenance at its age — costs about $3,995–$10,983 a year. Insurance sits around $1,120–$2,490 a year. The figures are class-level estimates from the federal record, with the formula on the methodology page; the model-year pages carry complaints, recalls and repair costs year by year.
