Start with what the Hyundai Xcent is: a 4-door sedan with 1.2 L Hyundai Kappa engine#Kappa II, built from 2014 to 2023, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market. What it meant takes a little longer.

The background

The Hyundai Xcent is a subcompact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. Based on the Hyundai Grand i10, the Xcent is a sedan manufactured by Hyundai Motor India Limited in Chennai. The Xcent was launched on 12 March 2014, being conceived to fit in the popular sub-4 metre sedan segment in India which emerged after the government imposed larger tax for cars longer than 4,000 mm (157.5 in) in length. It is also sold in markets outside India as the Hyundai Grand i10 Sedan.

The engineering

The engine is 1.2 L Hyundai Kappa engine#Kappa II; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. Drive goes through a 5-speed Manual transmission / manual / 4-speed Automatic transmission / automatic. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2425 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

In the Hyundai line-up the Hyundai Xcent has a clear place: it handed the line to the Hyundai Aura; the factory was Chennai. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Ford Escort, the Infiniti Q50, the Chevrolet Camaro. Its Hyundai stablemates include the Hyundai Accent WRC and the Hyundai Accent.
