The Hongqi CA72 is a car from Hongqi, built from 1958 to 1967, at the height of the post-war boom. Under the bonnet: 5655 .
How it came about
The Hongqi CA72 is an automobile produced by FAW Hongqi. It was the company's first production automobile and the first representative sedan that was constructed and built in China.
Produced from 1959 until 1965, the CA72 was only available to state institutions and the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and was regularly used in public events until the 1970s. Numerous details about technology and production are unclear, but reportedly 202 examples of the CA72 were built before it was replaced by the modernized CA770.
The hardware
Power comes from 5655 . It weighs 2000-2800 kg. It shifts through a 2 or 4-speed automatic. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 3400 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Family and rivals
Its family tree is legible: its successor was the Hongqi CA770; assembly was at Changchun, China. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Fiat 500, the Mini Mini, the Dodge Challenger — show what else the money bought that year. Its Hongqi stablemates include the Hongqi and the Hongqi 774.
What it costs now
There is no federal ownership record for the Hongqi CA72 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
