Start with what the GAZ-24 is: a 4-door sedan / 5-door wagon with 2.5&nbsp, built from 1970 to 1992, as the oil crises and the first emissions rules rewired the industry. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Leonid Tsikolenko, Nikolay Kireev.

The background

The GAZ-24 "Volga" is a car manufactured by the Gorky Automobile Plant (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod, GAZ) from July 1970 to 1986 as a generation of its Volga nameplate. A largely redesigned version (practically, a new car in a modified old body) – GAZ-24-10 – was produced from April 1986 to summer 1992.

The Belgian-assembled rebadged models were sold as Scaldia-Volga M24 and M24D for the Western European market. The lower body waist line, allowed the window area was to be increased, whilst using thinner linings in doors, roof, and other body panels notably increased interior space.

The engineering

The engine is 2.5  other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 1420-1765 kg. Drive goes through a 4-speed manual / 3-speed automatic (V8 only). The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 2800 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

In the GAZ line-up the GAZ-24 has a clear place: it replaced the GAZ-21 Volga; it handed the line to the GAZ-3102 Volga; the factory was Gorky, RSFSR. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the American Motors Corporation AMC Gremlin, the Suzuki Jimny, the Chevrolet Impala. Its GAZ stablemates include the Chaika and the GAZ 24-24.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the GAZ-24 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
