Start with what the Fiat 521 is: a 2-door coupe / 4-door sedan / 4-door limousine / 4-door cabriolet with straight-6 2516&nbsp, built from 1928 to 1931, the vintage years, when coachbuilders still shaped most of what was sold. What it meant takes a little longer.

The story

The Fiat 521 is a passenger car produced by Fiat between 1928 and 1931. The 521 was derived from its predecessor model, the Fiat 520, but with a bigger engine and chassis. The 521C was a shorter variant. This car was produced outside Italy, most notably at the Fiat-NSU plant in Heilbronn, starting in 1930, setting Fiat on the path to its subsequent multinational status. More than 33,000 Fiat 521s were produced in Italy and Germany.

What is underneath

The engine is straight-6 2516&nbsp. On the scales it comes to 1350 kg-1450 kg. Drive goes through a 4-speed manual. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 314 cm / 290 cm (521 C). These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

In the Fiat line-up the Fiat 521 has a clear place: it replaced the Fiat 520; it handed the line to the Fiat 522. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Volvo LV4, the Mercedes-Benz W08, the Bugatti Type 40 sedan. Nearby in the Fiat catalogue sit the FIAT 702 and the Fiat 1.

Owning one today

MotorJury scores cars on the United States complaint and recall record, and the Fiat 521 has none: too old, too rare, or never sold there. Its value today is a collector's question, decided by provenance and condition rather than by a class average.
