Numbers first, because with the Daihatsu Mira e:S they are the story: Petrol engine, 49 -. Daihatsu built from 2011, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market.

Where it came from

The Daihatsu Mira e:S (Japanese: ダイハツ・ミライース, Hepburn: Daihatsu Mira Īsu) is a kei car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu as the successor to the original Mira. It was previewed by the "e:S" concept car at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

The car was introduced to the Japanese market in September 2011. It was also sold by Toyota as the Toyota Pixis Epoch (Japanese: トヨタ・ピクシスエポック, Hepburn: Toyota Pikushisu Epokku), which was released on 10 May 2012 and by Subaru as the Subaru Pleo Plus (Japanese: スバル・プレオプラス, Hepburn: Subaru Pureo Purasu), which was released on 21 December 2012. The moniker "e:S" stands for "Eco (Ecology, Economy) and Smart".

Under the skin

Under the skin sits Petrol engine; it is rated at 49 -; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. Kerb weight is 730 –. Power-to-weight lands near 67 horsepower per tonne, which is unhurried — enough for the job, not for the bragging. The gearbox is a CVT. The wheelbase is 2455 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

In context

Where it sits in Daihatsu's history is not in doubt: the Daihatsu Mira / Daihatsu Esse / Subaru Pleo (Pleo Plus) came before it; it was built at Nakatsu, Ōita (Daihatsu Motor Kyushu), Japan. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Honda Brio, the Honda N-Box, the Toyota Aqua. Nearby in the Daihatsu catalogue sit the Daihatsu Applause and the Daihatsu Atrai.
