Start with what the Volvo Philip is: a 4-door sedan with 3.6&nbsp, built from 1952, at the height of the post-war boom. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Jan Wilsgaard.

Where it came from

The Volvo Philip was a concept car built by Volvo in 1952. It was designed especially for the United States market, and so was fitted with a prototype V8 engine called the B8B, which produced 120 hp (89 kW) at 4000 rpm along with whitewall tires and a hint of tailfins.

The design was inspired by American cars and was similar to the 1951 Kaiser. The designer was Jan Wilsgaard, who also designed the Volvo Amazon. However, it was cancelled by the board and never reached production, with only one car being made. That car was used for several years by the board at Bolinder-Munktell in Eskilstuna and is now preserved at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg. This vehicle was hand built under extreme secrecy and was subjected to thorough testing. However, the V8 engine entered production in 1956 and was used for a truck, the Volvo Snabbe, as well as for boats. It was known for being strong and reliable but also for high fuel consumption. Production of the engine had ceased by 1973.

Under the skin

The engine is 3.6&nbsp. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

In context

The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Cadillac Eldorado, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Chevrolet Corvette. Nearby in the Volvo catalogue sit the Volvo 144 and the Volvo 264 TE.

Owning one today

MotorJury scores cars on the United States complaint and recall record, and the Volvo Philip has none: too old, too rare, or never sold there. Its value today is a collector's question, decided by provenance and condition rather than by a class average.
