Start with what the Volvo 66 is: a 2-door sedan (car) / sedan / 3-door Station wagon / estate with 1.1 , built from 1975 to 1980, as the oil crises and the first emissions rules rewired the industry. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to John de Vries.
The story
The Volvo 66 is an automobile developed from the DAF 66, which was originally styled by Giovanni Michelotti. The compact car was introduced in August 1975, almost exactly a year after Volvo bought DAF, and before production of the Volvo 300 Series began.
What is underneath
The engine is 1.1 other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. Drive goes through a Variomatic. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Its place in the line
In the Volvo line-up the Volvo 66 has a clear place: it replaced the DAF 66; it handed the line to the none; the factory was Born (DAF Born), Netherlands. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Volkswagen Polo, the BMW 3 Series, the Hyundai Pony. Nearby in the Volvo catalogue sit the Volvo 144 and the Volvo 264 TE.
Owning one today
MotorJury scores cars on the United States complaint and recall record, and the Volvo 66 has none: too old, too rare, or never sold there. Its value today is a collector's question, decided by provenance and condition rather than by a class average.
