Start with what the Tata Tiago is: a 5-door hatchback with 1.2L Revotron I3, built from 2016, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market. What it meant takes a little longer.
The story
The Tata Tiago is a 5-door hatchback city car produced by Tata Motors in India since 2016. Codenamed the "Kite" during development, the Tiago was previously announced as the Tata Zica, with "Zica" being short for "zippy car", but it was changed because the launch of the car coincided with the outbreak of Zika virus.
Tiago, a common Portuguese masculine name, was simultaneously picked from suggestions solicited online and from brand naming company Appella's fully validated shortlist of names, who were commissioned by Tata Motors to find an alternative name in February 2016. Since March 2017, a sedan derivative of the Tiago known as the Tigor has been produced. The Tiago was facelifted in 2026.
What is underneath
The engine is 1.2L Revotron I3; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. Drive goes through a 5-speed manual / 5-speed AMT. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2400 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Its place in the line
In the Tata Motors Ltd line-up the Tata Tiago has a clear place: it replaced the Tata Bolt. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Chevrolet Bolt, the Ford Escort, the Chevrolet Camaro. Nearby in the Tata Motors Ltd catalogue sit the TaMo Racemo and the Tata 407.
