Start with what the Suzuki Cultus Crescent is: a 3-door hatchback / 4-door sedan (automobile) / sedan / 5-door station wagon/van with Petrol engine, built from 1995 to 2007, when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. What it meant takes a little longer.

The story

The Suzuki Cultus Crescent (Japanese: スズキ カルタス クレセント, Hepburn: Suzuki Karutasu Kuresento) is a subcompact car that was produced by Suzuki in Japan between 1995 and 2002, with South Asian production continuing until 2007. The Cultus Crescent was sold as such in Japan until May 1998, when it was renamed Suzuki Cultus due to the sales discontinuation of the previous Cultus in the Japanese market.

The Cultus Crescent was also marketed as the Suzuki Esteem in North America, Philippines and Thailand, and as the Suzuki Baleno throughout Asia, Australasia, Europe, and Latin America. In India where it was manufactured by Maruti Suzuki, the Cultus Crescent was sold as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. In the Philippines, the facelift model was marketed as the Chevrolet Cassia.

What is underneath

The engine is Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 870-1040 kg. Drive goes through a 5-speed Manual transmission / manual / 3-speed Automatic transmission / automatic / 4-speed Automatic transmission / automatic / Continuously variable transmission / CVT. The wheelbase is Hatchback: 2380 mm / Sedan/Wagon: 2480 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

In the Suzuki line-up the Suzuki Cultus Crescent has a clear place: it replaced the Suzuki Cultus/Swift/Esteem; it handed the line to the Suzuki Aerio / Suzuki Aerio/Liana (sedan/wagon) / Suzuki Swift (hatchback) / Suzuki SX4 sedan (India) / Chevrolet Optra (Philippines); the factory was Shizuoka prefecture. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Tacoma, the BMW Z3. Nearby in the Suzuki catalogue sit the Suzuki XL-7 and the Suzuki Landy.
