Start with what the Suzuki Cervo is: a 2+2, 2-door coupé hatchback with 539&nbsp, built from 1977 to 1982, as the oil crises and the first emissions rules rewired the industry. What it meant takes a little longer. The shape is credited to Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign.

The background

The Suzuki Cervo (Japanese: スズキ・セルボ, Hepburn: Suzuki Serubo) is a kei car manufactured by Suzuki Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1976 as the successor to the Suzuki Fronte Coupé, the Cervo name was originally affixed to a kei sports coupe, and then to models derived from the Suzuki Alto. The nameplate was retired between 1998 and 2006, and again in December 2009.

The engineering

The engine is 539  other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 535 -. Drive goes through a 4-speed manual. The layout matters: the engine hangs behind the rear axle, a layout that gives ferocious traction out of a corner and a reputation to match on the way in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

In the Suzuki line-up the Suzuki Cervo has a clear place: it replaced the Suzuki Fronte Coupé; the factory was Kosai Assembly Plant, Hamana-gun, Shizuoka, Japan. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the BMW 7 Series, the Lotus Esprit, the Mazda RX-7. Its Suzuki stablemates include the Suzuki XL-7 and the Suzuki Landy.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Suzuki Cervo — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
