Numbers first, because with the Suzuki Brezza they are the story: Petrol engine, 77 kW. Suzuki built from 2016, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market.
Where it came from
The Suzuki Brezza (known as Vitara Brezza for the first generation) is a subcompact SUV from Suzuki and manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India. The Brezza is the first Suzuki-branded car which was fully developed in India. The model was designed as a smaller alternative to the global market Vitara and targeted to young audiences.
It is only available for right-hand drive emerging markets in Asia and Africa. The first-generation model was also marketed by Toyota as the Toyota Urban Cruiser between 2020 and 2022. As in the original Vitara model, the name "Vitara" is derived from English word "vital," as in "vitality," while the name "Brezza" means "breeze" in Italian.
Under the skin
Power comes from Petrol engine; 77 kW is the published figure; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It weighs 1135 –. Work it out per tonne and you get about 68 horsepower — unhurried — enough for the job, not for the bragging. It shifts through a 5-speed Manual transmission / manual / 5-speed "AGS" Automated manual transmission / AMT (diesel, 2016–2020) / 4-speed Automatic transmission / automatic (petrol, 2020–2022). The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2500 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
In context
Its family tree is legible: its successor was the Toyota Urban Cruiser (2023) (Urban Cruiser) / Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor / Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor / Starlet Cross (Urban Cruiser); assembly was at Gurgaon (Maruti Suzuki), India. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Daihatsu Sigra, the Honda BR-V, the Kia Niro — show what else the money bought that year. Nearby in the Suzuki catalogue sit the Suzuki XL-7 and the Suzuki Landy.
