Mitsubishi does not build many cars like the Mitsubishi Concept-RA: a 2-door coupé with 4N14 2.2-litre I4 diesel, built from 2008 in the decade of stability control, dual-clutch gearboxes and the first serious hybrids.

The background

The Mitsubishi Concept-RA is a concept car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors, and first revealed at the North American International Auto Show in January 2008. It was speculated by the automotive press to presage a potential fifth generation of the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The car has an aluminium space frame chassis, and features a 4N14 2.2-litre clean diesel producing 150 kW (204 PS; 201 hp) and 420 N⋅m (310 lbf⋅ft), powering all four wheels through the company's S-AWC drivetrain and SST twin-clutch transmission. Following the lead of other Mitsubishi prototypes at the time, "green plastic" recyclable resin was used extensively in the body panels and interior for environmental reasons.

The engineering

Under the skin sits 4N14 2.2-litre I4 diesel. The gearbox is a SST twin-clutch transmission. The layout matters: drive goes to all four wheels, which is what lets the power be used on a wet road. The wheelbase is 2635 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Tesla Roadster, the Nissan 370Z, the Volkswagen Tiguan. Its Mitsubishi stablemates include the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Mitsubishi 360.
