The Mazda CX-8 is the Mazda that answered a simple question — how much car can this badge carry? — with 140 kW (2.5 L from Petrol engine. It was built from 2017 to 2019, as electrification stopped being an experiment and the crossover took every market. The shape is credited to Yuki Harada.

How it came about

The Mazda CX-8 is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by Mazda since the end of 2017. It is a three-row version of the CX-5. The CX-8 was Mazda's flagship SUV in Japan, as the larger, export-only CX-9 is not sold in the country. Outside of Japan, the CX-8 is available in China, Oceania, and Southeast Asia.

The hardware

The engine is Petrol engine; the output is 140 kW (2.5 L; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 1710-1920 kg. That is roughly 82 horsepower per tonne: unhurried — enough for the job, not for the bragging. Drive goes through a 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic. The wheelbase is 2930 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Mazda line-up the Mazda CX-8 has a clear place: it handed the line to the Mazda CX-80 (Japan, Australia and New Zealand); the factory was Hiroshima. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Hongqi H5, the Alpine A110 (2017), the Mitsubishi Xpander. Its Mazda stablemates include the Mazda BT-50 and the Mazda T2000.
