Lincoln does not build many cars like the Lincoln Navigator: a 5-door SUV with 5.4 , built from 1997 when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. Its designer of record is Fritz Mayhew (1994).
How it came about
The Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV marketed by the Lincoln brand of Ford since the 1998 model year. Sold in North America, it is based on the Ford Expedition.
It is the heaviest production Lincoln, the Lincoln with the greatest cargo capacity, and the first non-limousine Lincoln to offer seating for more than six people. Production was sourced from 1997 to 2009 at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan. Since 2009, production has also been sourced from the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
The hardware
Under the skin sits 5.4 other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. The gearbox is a 4-speed 4R100 automatic. The wheelbase is 119.0 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.
Family and rivals
Where it sits in Lincoln's history is not in doubt: it was built at Wayne, Michigan, U.S.. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Toyota Prius, the Subaru Forester, the Peugeot 206. Its Lincoln stablemates include the Lincoln First Call and the Lincoln Funeral Car.
