The Kia Carnival is a 5-door minivan from Kia, built from 1998, when airbags, anti-lock brakes and Japanese build quality became the world standard. Under the bonnet: Petrol engine.

Where it came from

The Kia Carnival (Korean: 기아 카니발) is a minivan manufactured by the South Korean automaker Kia since 1998, formerly marketed as the Kia Sedona in North America and several other markets. The first-generation Carnival was introduced in January 1998, and was marketed in a single, short- wheelbase version. Second-generation models were marketed (2006–2014) in short and long wheelbase variants.

A rebadged variant of the second generation was offered in North America as the Hyundai Entourage (2007–2009). Beginning in 2010, the second-generation model received updated equipment, including Kia's corporate Tiger Nose grille, as introduced by its then-new design chief, Peter Schreyer. Kia introduced its third-generation minivan in 2014, solely in a long-wheelbase format. The fourth-generation model was introduced in 2020, and Kia adopted the "Carnival" name in North America for the 2022 model year.

Under the skin

Power comes from Petrol engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. It shifts through a 4-speed Automatic transmission / automatic / 5-speed automatic / 5-speed Manual transmission / manual. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 2910 mm. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

In context

Its family tree is legible: assembly was at Gwangmyeong (List of Kia design and manufacturing facilities#Sohari Plant. Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Cadillac Escalade, the Audi TT, the Ford Focus — show what else the money bought that year. Nearby in the Kia catalogue sit the Kia K5 (Optima) and the Kia Magentis.

What it costs now

The money question first: $22,400–$41,500 is the typical asking range today, and running it — fuel and maintenance at its age — costs about $3,699–$7,055 a year. Insurance sits around $1,520–$2,300 a year. The figures are class-level estimates from the federal record, with the formula on the methodology page; the model-year pages carry complaints, recalls and repair costs year by year.
