Start with what the Isuzu Faster is: a 2-door cab chassis / 2-door pickup truck / 4-door pickup truck with 1.6 L List of Isuzu engines#Isuzu G engine, built from 1972 to 2002, as the oil crises and the first emissions rules rewired the industry. What it meant takes a little longer.

How it came about

The Isuzu Faster is a compact pickup truck that was manufactured and marketed by Isuzu between 1972 and 2002 over three generations. It was sold under myriad nameplates. Most commonly, they were marketed under their respective model codes: Isuzu KB for the first and second generations, TF for the third.

In Japan, the "Faster" name was eventually supplanted by Rodeo. It was also marketed under a number of other brands from the General Motors portfolio. The Faster was succeeded worldwide by Isuzu D-Max, except in Japan and North America.

The hardware

The engine is 1.6 L List of Isuzu engines#Isuzu G engine; other versions carried different engines, listed in the specification table below. On the scales it comes to 1099-1290 kg. Drive goes through a 4-speed manual transmission / manual / 3-speed automatic transmission / automatic. The wheelbase is 2600 mm (SWB) / 2995 mm (LWB). These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

In the Isuzu line-up the Isuzu Faster has a clear place: it replaced the Isuzu Wasp / Holden WB (for Australia, since 1984); it handed the line to the Isuzu D-Max / Isuzu Hombre (North America); the factory was Fujisawa, Kanagawa. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Renault 5, the Lancia Stratos, the Mitsubishi Lancer. Its Isuzu stablemates include the Isuzu Gemini and the 4000 Series Medium Duty.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Isuzu Faster — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
