The Honda FCX is a 4-door sedan from Honda, built from 2008 to 2014, in the decade of stability control, dual-clutch gearboxes and the first serious hybrids. Under the bonnet: electric motor.

The story

The Honda FCX (commonly referred to as Fuel Cell eXperimental) is a family of hydrogen fuel cell automobiles manufactured by Honda. The Honda FCX and Toyota FCHV, which began leasing on December 2, 2002, became the world's first government-certified commercial hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

As of March 2007, there are more than twenty Honda FCX vehicles in the hands of customers, including the state of New York, cities of Las Vegas, Chula Vista, San Francisco and the South Coast Air Quality Management District in three different American states. Limited marketing of a latest fuel cell vehicle named FCX Clarity, based on the 2007 concept model, began on June 19, 2008 in Japan and the United States. Honda believes it could start mass-producing the next model evolved from the FCX concept by 2018.

What is underneath

Power comes from electric motor. It weighs 3528 lb. The layout matters: the engine drives the front wheels, the packaging choice that gives a small car a big cabin. The wheelbase is 110.2 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Its place in the line

Its contemporaries in the catalogue — the Nissan 370Z, the Tesla Roadster, the Nissan GT-R — show what else the money bought that year. Nearby in the Honda catalogue sit the Honda Envix and the Honda Crider.

What it costs now

The money question first: $5,100–$7,400 is the typical asking range today, and running it — fuel and maintenance at its age — costs about $3,300–$4,640 a year. Insurance sits around $990–$1,390 a year. The figures are class-level estimates from the federal record, with the formula on the methodology page; the model-year pages carry complaints, recalls and repair costs year by year.
