Start with what the Holden Barina is: a 3/5-door hatchback (1985–2018) / 4-door sedan (2006–2018), built from 1985 to 2018, in the age of turbocharging and the first electronic engine management. What it meant takes a little longer.

How it came about

The Holden Barina is a subcompact automobile sold between 1985 and 2018 by Holden in Oceania. Each of the six generations have been badge-engineered versions of various General Motors vehicles, namely Suzuki Cultus, Opel Corsa, and Daewoo Kalos. Barina is an Australian aboriginal word meaning "summit".

Under the skin

The record carries the shape — a 3/5-door hatchback (1985–2018) / 4-door sedan (2006–2018). The engine, output and weight have not yet reached the open record, and MotorJury does not guess at them.

Family and rivals

In the Holden line-up the Holden Barina has a clear place: the factory was Hamamatsu. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Renault Espace, the SEAT Ibiza, the Toyota MR2. Its Holden stablemates include the Holden 48-215 and the Holden Adventra.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Holden Barina — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
