Dodge does not build many cars like the Dodge Wayfarer: a 2-door Roadster (automobile) / roadster/Sportabout / 2-door Coupé / business coupe / 2-door sedan (car) / sedan with 3773 cc Dodge Straight 6, built from 1949 to 1952 in a decade split by war, when civilian production stopped and restarted.

How it came about

The Dodge Wayfarer is an automobile produced by Dodge from February 1949 until 1952. It was discontinued without a replacement in the United States, although the Kingsway series remained available in export markets.

The Wayfarer was the first true roadster built by the Big Three since the 1930s. However, the roadster concept was soon altered to the plusher Sportabout as higher comfort levels were demanded by the post-war auto buyers. 9325 roadsters and Sportabouts were built, out of a total of 217,623 Wayfarers of all bodystyles.

The hardware

Under the skin sits 3773 cc Dodge Straight 6. The wheelbase is 115 in. These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Family and rivals

Where it sits in Dodge's history is not in doubt: the Dodge Eight (1930) came before it; the Dodge Meadowbrook Special followed it; it was built at Dodge Main Factory, Hamtramck, MI. On a showroom list of its day it stood against the Chevrolet Bel Air, the Citroën 2CV, the Porsche 356. Its Dodge stablemates include the Dodge 1500 and the 1955 Dodge.

The money

There is no federal ownership record for the Dodge Wayfarer — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
