Start with what the Škoda 1200 is: a 4-door sedan / 3-/5-door station wagon / estate with 1213 cc (74 cid) I4, built from 1952 to 1956, at the height of the post-war boom. What it meant takes a little longer.

The background

The Škoda 1200 is a family car produced by Czechoslovak automaker AZNP (Škoda Auto) from 1952 to 1956 at their plant in Mladá Boleslav. Sedan and station wagons versions were offered. The 1200 appeared in 1952 as a successor to the Škoda 1101, and was the first mass-produced Škoda to use the steel ponton format body. The car was powered by a four-cylinder 1213 cc OHV water-cooled engine producing at maximum power 36 PS (26 kW) at 4,200 rpm. The four-speed gear box included synchromesh on the top three ratios, power being delivered to the rear wheels via a jointed prop shaft.

The front suspension is independent using transverse leaf springs while the rear suspension is independent using transverse leaf springs with floating half-axles. Top speed is 105 km/h (65 mph). The 1200 was available as a four-door saloon, three-door van or five-door station wagon. There were also about 2,000 ambulances. Production ended in 1956.

The engineering

The engine is 1213 cc (74 cid) I4. On the scales it comes to 1060 kg. The layout matters: a front engine drives the rear wheels, the classic proportion — long bonnet, cabin set back — that most people picture when they picture a sports saloon or a grand tourer. The wheelbase is 2695 mm (106.1 in). These are manufacturer figures carried by Wikipedia and Wikidata, not road-test measurements.

Where it sits

In the Škoda Auto line-up the Škoda 1200 has a clear place: it replaced the Škoda 1101; it handed the line to the Škoda 1201; the factory was Mladá Boleslav, Czechoslovakia. The cars a buyer would have weighed it against include the Cadillac Eldorado, the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Chevrolet Corvette. Its Škoda Auto stablemates include the HZS-1 and the Trekka.

Owning one today

There is no federal ownership record for the Škoda 1200 — it predates the complaint database or was never sold in the United States — so MotorJury publishes no running-cost figure for it. For a car of this age the price is set by the collector market and the condition of the individual example, not by a formula.
